Looking forward to seeing how you fit that NV4500 into your truck. Going to be a nice setup. BTW, if the 62 GMC floor is like the 62 Chevy, it is going to be real tight for the clutch fork on the driver side.

I'm also curious about how you're going to do the parking brake.

TJ, It sounds like a great time. I can't wait to drive this old girl through the mountains. I still have that old v6, I'm trying to make sure it gets into the hands of someone that will use it.

Hi, My original plan was to keep the sm420 for a couple years then change over to something different. My wife being the amazing woman she is talked me into doing it now in order to not rip the tuck apart again so I did not argue and made the phone call to Advanced Adapters that day. I can not wait to drive this truck with the NV4500!!

Was your c20 a high hump? I don't see the fork being an issue but I'm just going off of pictures at this point. The fork looks to be lower than the bottom of the cab.

As far as the brake...... Ummmm... yea! Whatever happens I want to use the original lever mounted on the new transmission somehow. I was thinking if I can get a yoke flange that will fit the nv4500 then maybe I can adapt the original drum to it, I guess we will see what happens when i get to that point. Second option is to figure out how to add e brake to my rear drums and run a cable from the stock lever. third option would be disk brake upgrade with Cadillac calipers. I really don't want disks on the rear as this will be a well used work truck but it is an option as one way or another I want to have an e brake. I could put a line lock in but I know it's not DOT or a good Idea to leave the system pressurized. I'm down to hear other thought as well.

Is there a reason you did not just go with an original NV4500 bellhousing with the factory hydraulic clutch slave? Then all you would have to do is change your clutch master and run the line.

Well darn it I just don't know. I did a bunch of searching around for info on this swap and I figured I might of missed something. I'm using the later model NV4500. I wanted to use a stock iron bell housing but found that the newer style NV4500 will not work, if I had the older NV4500 then I could have done some machining to make it work. I could not find any info on using the stock NV4500 bell housing. I guess at this point I'm stuck with making what I have work. I'm still a bit nervous about making this all work. I hope I didn't screw myself over.

CFab is right. The easiest way is to mimic as closely as possible the factory configuration. Finding a factory style NV4500 bellhousing shouldn't be too difficult or expensive.

I too wanted to use a later cast iron bellhousing with driver side clutch fork because they are cheap and plentiful. But when I set the engine into the truck I saw that there was no room for the clutch fork. The cab floor/firewall drops right down almost on top of the driver side of the bellhousing. So I went and found a 60-62 V8 bellhousing and all is well. This also allowed for a no hassle installation of the slave cylinder and push rod. I'm done with this part of my build, so if you'd like to see this type of set up feel free to come by and check it out. I'm pretty close to Santa Cruz, at Summit Rd and Hwy 17. Shoot me a PM if you're up for it. I'm home all weekend.

l'd also say that the factory bellhousing crossmember is probably going to need to be removed. You'll need a crossmember for the rear of the NV4500 anyhow and the factory one will probably be in the way.

Spent some time getting the engine and transmission in and built a custom crossmember for the NV4500. The PO is a professional welder so being as I'm not I will take the crossmember to him for final welding. I wasn't sure of the driveshaft angles and all that so I built a fair amount of adjustment into the new crossmember just incase I need to make some adjustments up or down. Took the driveshaft to a shop in San Jose (South Bay Driveline) to get it shortened, rebuild and balanced. Next is to finish the cab work and try to get it sitting on the frame. I'm hoping the cab fits around the new transmission, I guess that's the chance I take for changing the transmission half way through the build.

It was a long drive that day 12 hours total, I started out that morning in Sacramento and was in Portland by nine. that includes going to your house, just a quick and easy 70 mile detour.

Thanks! I had one main goal when I decided to go with the NV4500 and that was to keep the drive shaft parking brake and the hand brake lever. I scrapped the original idea of keeping the drum itself but was going to do what ever it took to keep the hand lever. I'll get more pictures and give some details on them here in the next few day. My wife is keeping me busy but I'll have some free time soon. I will be taking the cab back off and the engine and trans out again. they were in just for mock up in order to fab the cross member. The cab only went back on so it was easier to tow the 700 miles to Oregon. I will be able to lay it all out and take pictures then, hopefully sooner than later.

I like the trans mounted brake handles also. Your brake looks much more complicated than mine. Scroll down to post 2599 & 2600 for pictures. The Lokar parts made this easy. It gets the rear wheels good & tight in three clicks.

I did not want to use a cable. It's actually very simple, the mount holds the caliper as well as the handle but its just two pieces of flat steel and one piece of angle. the linkage in the picture is not the final product it was just for getting an idea of what I need to do, the final product should be much nicer and yea it only takes three of four clicks to be tight. the disk is going to be mounted right there on the yoke of the transmission.

I ordered the wrong disk the first time around and it was twenty thousandths of an inch off center but it fits the yoke on the Dana 60 so I kept it and ordered the correct disk for trans yoke. In the future I plan to have two drive shaft parking brakes, one at the trans and one at the rear end at that time I will activate the rear caliper with a cable from Lokar off of the same handle but for now I'm just using the trans yoke with mechanical linkage.
