Re: Low mileage 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton - Undoing the hacks!

Thank you! More progress this weekend. Painted all of the engine’s sheet metal.

I picked up a new single roller timing set, the factory one had more chain play than I really wanted to see. I also got new upper and lower oil pressure sensors, knock sensor, coolant temp sensor, thermostat and gasket, EGR gasket, and an oil filter.

New timing set installed!

New front main seal, timing cover, and new water pump installed.

Rear main seal, oil pan, and oil filter installed!

I poured some oil in the pan and spun up the oil pump, and we have oil at the rockers! Installed the valve covers, harmonic balancer, and some of the new sensors.

Finished up with most of the accessories. Still have the power steering plus one or two small things, but the alternator, A/C, pulleys, exhaust, and minor other parts are on!

I like seeing the TBI getting all cleaned up. Looks good. It is the stock TBI water pump aluminum? It looks like it in the picture.

Thanks! And no, they’re just regular cast iron. However, this is a “-P” water pump from Napa, which is supposedly higher flow and better internals than the typical stock replacement.

I managed to nearly finish up the engine today! Finally got both of the correct oil sensors in from the parts store.

I finished painting the rest of the accessory drive, as well as a few bolt on pieces. I also replaced all the belts.

Finally, cleaned and rebuilt the throttle body as the last project for the night.

Re: Low mileage 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton - Undoing the hacks!

Thank you!

Since the biggest portion of this project is looming near (swapping the cab over), I decided to use this weekend to repair the hole cut in the bed, since I won’t be able to access it once the cab is on. Started out by bending some metal as filler pieces.

The hole I’m dealing with.

Cleaned up the area.

Cutout traced.

Old material cut out.

Started on the inside piece due to easier access from the front.

Front piece welded in!

Cleaning up the welds.

Applied some primer.

Not completely perfect, but far better than what was there!

Also bolted the last of the accessories to the engine, the fan, dipstick, and motor mounts.

Finally got around to painting the transmission as well! Primer applied

Paint applied!

And tape off!

It’s been on back order for months! I didn’t want to take another chance Chevy LS oil filters are the same way. Back ordered for almost 90 days now.

Right? Whoever built it had good intentions, just poor execution

I painted the front panel on the bed, since it won’t be accessible once the cab is swapped over.

I also pulled the transmission (going to a friend), and transfer case, which will be getting a rebuild.

Re: Low mileage 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton - Undoing the hacks!

Thanks!

I started on the transfer case rebuild yesterday, and it turned into a disaster.

First, I noticed large metal chunks everywhere with no real source.

Found a shift fork partially worn through.

Front output shaft thrust surface destroyed. Bearings were missing.

Input shaft grooved, bearings weren’t removable. Looks like they had spun in the case as well.

Synchro worn in an almost impossible way.

So, this 208 is officially junk!

I picked up another 208, dirty, but with low mileage for $50. These internals are much nicer!
