I totally dig the "new" old cooler for road trips. We always had a smaller one to keep sandwiches and drinks cold for those longer trips. Good times....

Really unique and interesting Accessory for your truck. I remember when the early types of massed produced radar detectors hit the market. I had friends with them in the cars and remember passing grocery or conveince stores that would set them off. Seems like the early types only worked on several radar ranges.

When Smokey was busting everybody driving over 55 MPH, back in the day, they were essential. Now the XK band is obsolete. Cops are using more sophoistiated radars [and laser], speed limits are higher, and either the X or the K band is the same frequency as the automatic sliding doors at every convenience mart and bulk gas station. So they beep every time you pass one, even when you're on the street.
They look vintage, but they're no longer effective in their primary role.

Anyone know what the fluid medium is inside? Mineral oil?
I think I could inject some more and seal it with a dab of epoxy. They have shot up in price now.
I like a magnetic compass as a back up to the GPS.
I drilled a small hole in the top of mine, used a syringe needle to fill with baby oil. Then threaded a small screw with an O ring to seal, just incase I need to fill it again. I used the compass on my cell phone to align North on the compass. I have had it in my truck for a few months now and still seems to be working well.

Thanks for that.
I may try it. I've also been ogling 2-1/2'' aircraft compasses. The General Aviation kind that were $20 retail in 1970. About $100 on ebay now. Some are cheaper when dry.

There is this stuff called compass fluid used in aircraft compasses. I think I have some left from refilling my old plane's compass.

Does Sporty's Pilot Shop or All Aircraft Parts sell it?

Baby oil I have on hand.

c1971 -- Do you think 2 ounces is enough?
Also, I think a non-ferrous filler hole screw would avoid influencing the magnet's alignment.

I didn't see it on Sporty's but Aircraft Spruce has it. I think I bought mine at a pilot shop by the airport. Try that or an FBO or avionics shop.

I didn’t measure how much I installed, my compass was approximately half full. The screw I used was very small, I removed it from an old tape deck I had lying on my work bench, it doesn’t seem to mess with the performance of the compass.

I just put these steps on. They're reproduced by member Mike Cofield. Getting in the Blazer is so much easier now.

Gauge indicates it's spent.
The emergency equipment company might refuse to recharge it. The tank may be too old to be hydrostatted.
A shiny dud fire extinguisher is only good for smacking methheads in the face when they try to carjack you.
Useless in a fire.

I understood that. My point is that a Fire Extinguisher is an important piece of equipment, most especially when you need one. Grabbing a dud unit in an emergency can be disastrous.
It's the equivalent of responding to the call of: ''Is there a doctor in the house?''
with, "Why, yes, I have a PhD in Oriental Philosophy.''
Having a real, good-to-go fire extinguisher also on hand is better, but there's still the issue of the probability of someone -- in a panic -- grabbing the historically-correct dud artifact, instead of the life-saving device, when seconds count.

And if you don't think there will ever be a fire on one of these old trucks, you haven't been around them long enough.
