Z71 vs 4x4

What's the difference between the two in a 2006 1500 Silverado?

1997 Chevy Silverado 1500 - 4.3 vortec, extended cab, 21 highway MPG, stock. "Red" SOLD ($3,000)
1987 Toyota 4wd Pick-up - work in progress, future DD SOLD ($1,850)
1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins 5spd Quad cab - old 12 valve with some work done
2004 Chevy Silverado - Black, 4x4, 5.3L, stock for now

Underneath that rust is a heart of gold

my unprofessional opinion is that Z71 was the skid plates and upgraded wheels & tires package on top of the 4WD.

I was under the impression that it was something worth having, liked a locked rear end or something that would actually sort of help? Skid plates are great but damn, I could make my own.

I've been told that the z71 package includes a limited slip rear end, a little bit heavier duty suspension , and an extra skid plate.

Bigger/different shocks is the main thing along with what was already mentioned. Only thing I may add is that a lot the various GM replacement Z71 shocks are rediculously priced depending on which specific shocks the vehicle requires. Seems like the aftermarket hasn't caught up with a lot of the Z71 shocks either.
