Gas Tank relocation

I'm considering relocating the gas tank in my 71 SWB Stepper. Is there a complete 'KIT' out there other than LMC for this project ? I have the bed off and am redoing the wood etc, and figure now is the time to do that. Any replies are appreciated.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

I got mine from Brothers and also order the fuel kit at the same time. Cost wasn't bad and had everything I need to install it

Re: Gas Tank relocation

As far as I know there is no "complete" kit available that includes everything you need.

Yes, the tanks from LMC, Classic Industries, etc comes with the tank, the fuel sender, the mounting straps, but nothing else. No extra fuel line, no fuel filler nozzle, no extra sender wire.

These installs are all a little different.

Step side, fleetside, wood bed, metal bed, short bed, long bed. Top fill through the bed, side bed through the bedside/fender, filler located in side marker or tail light.

Search this forum for a ton of threads on different installations. Every install is just a bit unique as are the trucks.

FYI - The Permacap website in this thread is no longer valid. Not sure they are still available.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

I did the LMC tank. I used a 71 Blazer fill tube, donor patch panel, including the cover in the bed. Looks factory, and fills without stopping.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

I used a 1990 jeep wrangler tank and a fuel sending unit for a 1990 s10 blazer. It worked pretty good.

Thumbs up Re: Gas Tank relocation

No Limit gas tank with baffeles and sump for fuel injection if you decided to go with it later. I used it as a regular tank though. Rob is a supporting member here also.(Carolina truck shop) is who I ordered it through. I got the filler neck from a 90 model Chevy truck with the metal piece for the body also for less than $50.00 at the local LKQ yard.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

I used a Boyd’s Welding tank. Super nice tank and it came with the sending unit installed and mounting hardware. I’m really pleased with it and would highly recommend them.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

No 1 stop complete kit that I know of but...the Boyd tank is what I have and it’s a nice piece. You can get them thru mcb parts who are a supporting member here. U can use hot rod fuel hose for the lines. They support here as well. If this is more money than u want to put into it then look at the Holley site. They have released a line of products aimed at these trucks. Mcb is a direct supplier for them and they usually have better pricing than most on the Holley line. Good luck on your project and let us know how it turns out for u.

This is what I had planned for my truck, but then decided to keep the in cab tank, for now.
I collected everything needed, except For ordering the “Tank Kit”.
It’ll be a hard choice for me to do this conversion, as I’d like to keep the truck close to factory.
I never know though, maybe next year I’ll decide to convert it.

Talking Re: Gas Tank relocation

No limit tank sits nice under the frame and you can barely see it under the back. That was why I picked it. I didn't want that big old looking drum under the truck like the other's. It came with everything I needed other than the hard lines. I moded the rear frame brace so the tank would slide inside the frame rail and give it more support and protection in case of a rer end hit. I then bolted the rear cross member back into it.

Re: Gas Tank relocation

Performance online has tanks and all necessary parts for our trucks. I put one on my ‘70 fleet side and got the tank, mounting hardware and sender
It’s a baffled aluminum tank angled in the back so it doesn’t hang down like the ugly bubble LMC blazer tanks.
Really nice set up and reasonably priced. I hear the Boyd tanks are also really nice.
