Torque Converter

So I have everything I NEED for my engine swap (minus oil and other start-up things I can get at the local auto store), but I am wondering if I should consider installing a new torque converter. I am going from a 305 to a 350 with about 365hp. The tranny in the truck is staying, and it has been rebuilt recently, but I don't know what that work consisted of. It is a th350 tranny. Should I pony up for a new converter, and if so, which one should I consider for this engine?

Thanks guys

Re: Torque Converter

Its cheep insurance to simply replace your converter.

you dont say much about the details of your truck but if it hauls at all; the a 13 inch one is usually best

She wont be hauling anything, and I really don't plan on putting a ton of miles on it, or running it too hard.

Re: Torque Converter

Yes, you should . I bought one from FTI and have had no issues with it, for my 700R4. They have them for the TH350 too. It might be worth a look.

Re: Torque Converter

With the cam in that 350, I would definitely put a torque converter in it.

Re: Torque Converter

Def! Unless you have the old converter cut there is no way to get it cleaned out. Any debris in the fluid will go from the old trans to the new. Cheap insurance to get a new one and good to have that peace of mind!

Re: Torque Converter

A rebuilt transmission will usually include a new torque converter. You might contact the shop that did the rebuild and see if they have a record of what they installed and if they have a recommendation for you.

Re: Torque Converter

What cam is in it? Look up the specs and see that rpm stall they recommend.

Just put a B&M 2400 in my 350/350 with a Comp Thumpr Cam, works great. Far better than trying to run the stock TC.

Re: Torque Converter

If you have been running that torque converter with that transmission already you could just keep running it with it. But if you have a cam with more lift and duration now, a little more slip ( higher stall ) will make life a little easier on the street.
