I'm glad you took the time to do this and post it, thank you. Some people will say that prices are high now because so little fuel was burned last year during shut downs. I call BS because, yes, gas may have been down, but diesel and jet fuel were still being used at near normal rates. Diesel more than jet A.

Besides that what clicked in my mind when I saw your graphs is this...... 2008 was the first year for DPF's and the new diesel emissions. The emissions got more strict each year and the fuel consumption also increased with mileage going down. Is it a part of it? I believe so. It's pretty obvious the high gas prices have been the creator of the inflation by that info.

It must be global warming's fault.

Back in ~ '08, some wise guys on Wall Street figured they could make a killing by tweaking with fuel futures. At least that was the story I heard.

Why has it been so volatile since 2008?
A long steady period of US and world economic growth. 3rd world countries coming online as producers and trying to crack into that "good living" we have here and become first world (china and India immediately come to mind). In this case, the price appears to be a steady supply/demand (worldwide).

After 2008? pffft. I don't know.... it's been an up and down mess. The last time I remember gas being crazy was due to Katrina and shortages and all sorts of fun stuff.

The impact of these fuel prices hasn't hit all the food, goods and services you use yet.

I had to delete the other stuff I wrote.

Yes...No one on the news talks about heating oil prices getting outragous, but they sure are. Many houses burn oil here in the Northeast to keep warm. I have been using my woodstove more than ever in the last month.

Re: Gas Prices?

My wood stove runs nonstop pretty much from early November to late March. I run the propane furnace 2-3 times a year to make sure it’s operating correctly and that’s about it. I ain’t gonna pay propane prices when I can get the wood for the cost of some hard work and gas for the chainsaw.

Larry is dead nuts on with the prices of food and everything else going nuts once all this crap hits the fan. I’m dreading it already. I’m spending $350-400 bi weekly on groceries as it is to feed my family of 5.

Yeah like many others I figured once he got elected energy costs would increase so locked in the rate rather than chance the market.

Been heating primarily with wood for about 45 years now, with baseboard electric and a kerosene stove for backup.

My Dad's furnace used to run on fuel oil. Someone converted it to diesel before dad bought the place in '85 I believe. It's always ran on diesel as far as I can remember. I'm not sure which is cheaper to run now.

Yep, I had to get gas for the WD45 to put a round bale in for my mom's hay burners, and 5 gal for generators. 9.1gal total for $40. Hopefully those horses taste good. Nah, they're getting pretty old.

They call it fuel oil here but its dyed #2 diesel has been for years here. Last few years it has 10 to 20% bio fuel mixed in .

Wonder if your dad's was made to burn #3 or heavier never seen one here in a residential setting . In my youth I used to be a helper for a mechanical contracting company . Worked on some of the heavy oil burners in NYC . Had to wear earmuffs around them when they were running .

Re: Gas Prices?

We have snow coming tomorrow so I went to the store for Milk and bread And there was a $5.00 sale on the large cans of Maxwell house coffee , Just as you walk in the door There was a crowd of 20 + people standing in line staring at their phones waiting for their Starbucks fix as I walked past them I overheard the conversation of a gas station about 15 miles away where the price was .10 less a gallon than the gas in the parking lot ??? These people drove to the grocery store ,parked their car and walked inside to wait in line for a $7.00 cup of coffee but they'll drive an extra 15 miles to save .10 a gallon ?? The local Hardees had a line around the building .

I've sat in the gas lines in the 70's at 2:00 am just to get 10 gallons of gas at 7:00 am just to get to work and home again , Endured a few recessions since then. and it looks to me like we're getting ready for another one soon .

Dad's place was the 1st house where he's at in the area. All the land was owned by that family and they had the biggest milk cow operation in Polk County at the time. The stories we were told were the farmer was in hock beyond his means, he got drunk, blocked the driveway so fire trucks couldn't come up, and he burnt all of his out buildings. Nowadays it's getting harder to confirm that stuff because all of that generation are passing on. It was built in 1898 if I remember correctly. It has coal walls in the basement. From what I remember of the furnace is it was converted at some point but I don't remember. I found out later in m life it uses the same style of burner/injector as a diesel pressure washer. I can only assume this was set up for #2 as well. I remember we replaced the old tanks and those were nasty. I do have another garage furnace I bought that is oil/diesel but I haven't ever hooked it up. I had to get that to replace the wood stove thanks to insurance regs.

I know what you mean. I'll drive a little out of my way for cheaper fuel if I'll save a good amount. But for cents, no, I've got other stuff to do. Unfortunately, I know you're right on the last part. The writing is on the wall.
