Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I had a 327 in my last '57 truck and it had plenty of power. Nothing like a well setup LS motor, but enough to get me in trouble.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

I have a 350 engine out of a mid 90s Chev truck, and have added some block huggers and a "towing" type cam that falls over by 5500 revs. I think I would be lucky to get to 260hp, and its actually not enough.

Truck has Jag front & rear suspension, 235/75/15 whitewalls on chromies at the back and has run a best of 16.1 on the quarter at about 78mph. Its a slug and I have a twin turbo set up in the shed.......

However, my street legal t bucket has 851hp (dyno'd) from its blown 540 cube engine and that was too much. I put it into the wall at the National Drags last month. It was a much nicer car when it only had 627hp with the blown 454.

I have learned that you CAN have too much horsepower, tho I can claim to have had a street driven 9 second hot rod. Well I still have it but it needs a rebuild now.

^^^^ DANG! Glad you are still here. Your month long road trip in the truck sounds like a good time, hitting the wall in that thing doesn't.

With that short of a wheelbase and 851hp, sounds like fun but I wouldn't drive it. Glad you are safe thank roll cage!

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

We run under IHRA sanction down here at the two main tracks. The safety gear did its job and I got no cuts, no bruises, no headaches and no race harness rash. The car can be repaired one day.

not sure what yrs that was available, i bought a 67 camero with a 327/327hp

truk had the 140hp 350 in it when i bought it in the 80s, even then it was a tire smoker
these trucks are very lite, especially out back
You are wrong on the 327 being the first GM engine with 1 hp per ci. That would be a 57 Corvette FI 283 with 283 hp. They did make some big HP numbers with 327s though. I had a 64 Corvette with (adverstised) 365 hp.

Don't know if 59 is different but my 56 has the hp rating printed on the vin tag on the forward driver side door jamb. Might go look at yours and see if it's the same.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

My truck with a 5.3 is "rated" at 285 hp but is untuned and the fuel trims show I'm losing power through timing and fuel issues.

My father in law has a 305 hp LS1 62 Vette
My brother in law has a 550hp LS7 vette
One of my bosses just got a Nissan GTR

conclusion...I like my truck but the vettes are much faster, but traction limited. Though it's not as cool as the old cars, the GTR with it turbos and all wheel drive is just flat out awesome. It's stupid fast because it not only makes dumb levels of power but can hook it to the ground like it's glued to it. It may the first car that has really scared me when I rode in it. Could be because of the driver, too, though...

I can't tell you much about that front end other than its a fiberglass frontend. I've spoken to the guy before and found him to be a butthead and I'm allergic to buttheads.lol So once I see a person is a a**hole I walk away and leave it at that.

Re: how much horsepower does your truck have

My 57 has a 1973 350 from a Monte Carlo. Make sure your sitting down. It has 145 (net) hp. NET!!! My HEI distributor is larger than the 2bbl carb! I have added headers and a 2.5" exhaust so I am sure its pushing 150+ ponies, easily.

I had one of those once. I thought it was faaaast! Then I put on a 4bbl and it got faster. Whoohoo!!! Wasn't life nice when 155hp was exciting?

those 73 - late 80s sbc were a tad anemic
make sure you re-install the smog pump, that should suck a few more ponies out it
