Not really sure where the cap came from. I have several coffee cans of various plugs, caps and such I have picked up thru the years or salvaged from parts and projects. I put the cap on to give a more "finished" look to the top of the tank. The small hole "may" help to keep the pressure equalized in the tank, altho not sure if that would even be an issue.
