Rear Axle Codes

Does anyone have the info to decode the axle codes that are stamped on the top of the left hand tube of the rear end for all years (67-72) including Burbs? I found some info but it only included 67 and 68-nothing for my 1970 trucks.

Re: Rear Axle Codes

The code on the tube is TDE. I searched the web some more tonight and found an answer to someone's question on that rear axle code on a build sheet and the answer was a 3.07 gear. Don't know for sure if that is correct. Truck had a 307 with a 4 speed.

Re: Rear Axle Codes

You are correct. 3.07:1 for code TDE if the gears haven't been changed.

If you are going to do any real detective work a parts manual is a good reference to have. Axle and engine codes are only a small fraction of the useable data. Now since I have posted links several times to a parts catalog and the GM parts Wiki I'm going to make you work just a bit. So go to the link and read, if you must shortcut down to post #17. Remember parts manuals are like a new language if you have not been exposed to them before.

Re: Rear Axle Codes

It looks like code HE is a 3.07:1 ratio. It is still a good idea to pull the cover and put some fresh oil in. You can check the no's stamped in the ring gear at the same time.

Can you tell what year from this code HE121w

It has a hole cast into the pumpkin for the panhard bar.

Do you know when the 12 bolt rear end went to 30 spline axles?

Re: Rear Axle Codes

I am trying to ID a rear end housing that I have. The code on the passenger side tube is:

HA02 17W

On the driver side I found an 88 stamped on the tube.

I don't care what gears or if it is a posi, I am just looking for the year model. I know it is a 12 bolt, with an Eaton Posi carrier and 4.10 Richmond gears. The housing appears to be a 65-72 since there are torch marks at an angle from cutting off the pads on the tubes.

Any info on this would be great.

How does a 72 CA30/PA30 4.57 open HO72 sound to you?

Re: Rear Axle Codes

Hmm, my rear end is a 12 bolt & currently has a 2.76 in it (I understand it could have been changed somewhere along the line) and I have no idea where it came from. HO72 looks like a 10 bolt. Pardon my ignorance, but what's a CA30/PA30 model?

Re: Rear Axle Codes

Sure would have been easier if you had mentioned that up front.
The application I gave was for a 72 C30 1-ton truck or a P30 1-ton step van. Since you have a 12 bolt (now stated) I spent some time looking for you. GM parts wiki is showing RAC as a 78 C10 12-bolt open 2.76 axle. There very well might be others.

Here are some links if you want to look around. Sorry, my connection is not fast enough nor do I have the time for most non-67-72 requests that are outside stock applications.

Re: Rear Axle Codes

Sorry for the lack of info, I didn't realize the code would span across two different types of axles. Thanks a lot for the info!

thanks john, that's good news. it should have 30 spline axles in it. I assume that the carrier in it will only fit 3.73 and up gears, 4 series. but since i'm looking for a posi I should be able to get a truck unit for 3 series gears, correct. the 3.73 are just to much for the th350. thinking about a 3.08 or a 3.42 to calm it down a bit.

Re: Rear Axle Codes

I know this is an old thread but didn't want to start a new thread.

I picked up this rear end to rebuild for the truck. I know it is a 12 bolt but can someone decode the stampings please?
