72 no spin diff?

I'm almost sure this is a eaton 3/4 ton no spin. Can someone confirm this? Also, I counted 32 teeth on the ring gear- what ratio is it? Thanks for your input/help! (The SPID does say NO SPIN)

Re: 72 no spin diff?

I think it is a 2 pinion open diff. (Meaning just one set of spider gears). And you need both the pinion and ring gear teeth to know the ratio. FYI, it should be stamped on the outside diameter of the ring gear somewhere. 32:7 = 4.57 if that is how many teeth on the pinion gear. The day/date/year should be stamped as well.

Re: 72 no spin diff?

There should be a code stamped on top of your carrier on the input shaft side. The first two or three letters will identify what series it's for (10,20 or 30), the ratio, and if it had positraction or not. The codes are listed in the Chevy Truck Parts Catalog. Mine is JU (Series 20, 4.10, no posi). Pic of mine showing code below.

If you tell me the year and the code I can look it up for you if you like.

Re: 72 no spin diff?

You can't tell from the angle you took the picture from, the case is the same for a locker and open diff. Take a picture from the right more and you will either see spider gears...or not. If you have spider gears you have an open diff. You can also check by jacking the rear end up and rotating one side forward and back while having someone else hold the opposite side. It will click and engage if it is a locker.
