67 exterior door handles

I'm sure by the heading some of you know my problem already!!!

I have 67 doors-- Handles I bought sometime back are listed as 67-72.
Now, I'm looking for the correct handles. Everyone lists one handle----

Anyone know of a supplier of 67 handles?? Any help appreciated,,

Re: 67 exterior door handles

So far, I have been told by several major suppliers that I don't know what I'm talking about when I tell them there is a difference. Only one new parts supplier has acknowledged the difference and has a disclaimer on their website about how the handles fit.

I have two absolutely perfect 67 doors----that are already painted, modifying the door to fit isn't my first priority. Its not rocket science to make them fit, but it will require a piece to be built as well as butchering the mounting holes.

So far I'm still looking for used ones.

Re: 67 exterior door handles

Michael is looking for handles also-----

The difference in handles (and doors) is----- in the handle, the screw (bolt) hole is at an angle compared to the contact face of the handle.

In the door--- the mounting holes in the door are horizontal and the re-inforcement inside the door is vertical (because the mounting screws are supposed to go thru the door and into the handle Horizontally.

in 68-72 doors the mounting holes in the door are slightly offset because the screws go thru the door at aprox. a 15 deg. angle.

You can elongate the door holes-----but, the mounting re-inforcement on the inside of the door is still vertical-----which means as you tighten the bolt it wants to rotate the handle downward.

You need an angled pad for the screw to tighten against, As well as elongating the holes.

As I mentioned, its not a major job----but I'm having a problem believing that none of the parts suppliers either know it or are remotely interested in the fact that they wont fit.
I searched far and wide for perfect doors and due to the fact that the doors are already painted I really don't want to screw with them.

Starting today I'm designing these "pads" and will make them from aluminum----if I cant find acceptable 67 handles.

Re: 67 exterior door handles

Why don't you bottom out a bolt in a 68 and up handle with thread locker on it. Cut off the bolt, then re-drill and tap at the correct angle, seems pretty simple. You would need a drill press and some sharp bits.

True,, I'm amazed so far that this thread hasn't generated replies on how others have dealt with this issue---I know I'm not the first!!

If I do go to a machine shop with prints--I will build extras.

Re: 67 exterior door handles

Remove handle and over size the hole in the plate, the bolt will then mate to the angle of the outer skin allowing the use of the 68-72 handles. Not much room to do so but it works..

Id post a pic but.....

Re: 67 exterior door handles

What I remember when I was putting 68' donor doors on my 70' GMC...

"Side note on the doors, these door are 68' donor door I got last year, 70' ones were toast. Had to plug old trim holes, layout and drill new ones before paint, enlarge holes for new door handles.....67' & 68' had reinforcing backing plates for the door handles those years, that’s good, but they also have inset holes....that calls for longer bolts than 69 - 72."
