You can still haul beer though and that's what matters most.

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

The idea of a softer ride sounds kinda nice. But I do use my truck as a truck sometimes. What if I used the TJ springs in the rear with something like the Air Lift 1000 airbags inside the springs? I know your probably saying why not just go full air bagged rear but I don't want to change my ride stance I just want to be able to bring it back up to ride height with a load in it.

Any thoughts or experiences.

I've wondered the same thing myself. I'll be needing to haul my motorcycle here soon when we move, but I've already done this mod so I don't know if I can drive it up into the back of thr truck. I had a few friends stand in the bed to see how much it would hold, and from the looks of it I think it could do 500 pounds without bottoming out to badly. It'll sag pretty good, but if you take it easy I don't think it'd be to big of a problem. Only one way to find out though:uhmk:

Heres my old 60 with rear jeep springs. As you can see, theres alot of beef in there. Granted I wasnt going highway speeds, but it wasnt bottomed out either. Those kids rode back there for 4 hours...haha

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

Hi everyone. I'm new to the boards as well. I recently picked up a 69 C20 that had been sitting for about 10 years. I did the usual tune up stuff (rebuilt carb, fluids, plugs, etc, etc) and got her dialed in for daily driving. She runs great (good strong 250), but my wife kindly described her as labor inducing. The only suspension work I've done has been on my 73 CB500 cafe racer, and a buddy's RX7. I'm assuming the fundamentals are pretty much the same. Any tips to making this painless, and what would you recommend for front drop?

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

Just wanted to add a note to this thread about the rear Jeep TJ/LJ springs.
There are four different versions of the springs that were used from 1997 through 2006. These are the ones that can be used on the C10. Similar rear springs could be found on the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ. All four versions are the same length wise but vary in rate.
The only way to tell them apart is by the color coded tags that are on the springs from the factory, they read as follows:
103AA (or 3AA) 130lb.
104AA (or 4AA) 140lb.
105AA (or 5AA) 150lb.
106AA (or 6AA) 160lb.
The colors on the tags can vary and the rates are "ball park" at best.

We all know drop springs are relatively cheap, but free is better:).
As a WARNING FYI Here is mine with front springs cut TOO MUCH:o
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/98/...00019vd.th.jpg
I cut 2 full coils, then ended up with rubber spacers under the springs and some 1" bumpstops in place of the stock ones. In hindsite 1.5 coils would probably be ok.It rides like crap and bottoms out, but it was FREEEEE and allowed me to save my $ for '32 ford parts:whine:
I got a set of wrangler springs for the rear for free but have not gotten around to installing them yet.:o

I cut 2 coils off my stock springs, and boy was it low. It looked awesome, but the ride was pretty stiff, and I was always smashing my headers!

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

The ride is real rough with cut springs. I did that once too.

This Jeep spring mod looks like something to do in the near future. What is used to hold them in place? I have cut coils welded in the rear now from the PO. The ride is not too bad in the rear, but would like it smoother.

Are chevelle springs any 'stronger/thicker' than jeep springs? (I like the drop of the jeep springs but not the hauling capacity).

Shock relocators on the cheap too...

That looks awesome... I see the stock springs for the Chevelle can be had on RockAuto for about $55-65. How does it ride? Bottom out like crazy? Did you relocate your shocks?

How is the front lowered, if you don't mind me asking.

It rode great. I would imagine that the rear weight of our trucks and a Chevelle are about the same.
On the front, I cut 1.5 coils and cut off the bump stops on the LCA's. I sold that truck about a year ago, but I wouldn't recommend the coil cuts that much just because it puts the LCA's too close to the ground. If you're considering cutting coils, read this first....

so in english.... what do i need to drop the front 2 inches without cutting.

oldblue1968chevy 02-19-2011 07:51 PM

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

Drop spindles, 'lowered' coil springs, air bags

cut 1 coil off and you'll be fine

daverod 02-19-2011 09:02 PM

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

jeep spring in the rear and a c notch. Put 7 sheets of 3/4" plywood in there today. Rode sweet no bump.;) Front coils cut about 2 removed the bumps and the brackets.

Re: Jeep Coil Spring Drop

Can you add air bags inside the springs to help carry the load. Just like air shocks of yesteryear? Set up the same way.

New guy here:
