The trucks at my dad's shop, and I dont know the tire size off hand. Sorry. I'll try to look next time.

As for the rack..... I heard enough 'yeahs' to support my opinion. I'm not gonna drill holes until its driving, but I'll be rockin' it.

So is this truck the same length as a Suburban?

Tow Me 11-17-2009 02:45 AM

Re: Crewella - My '81 crew cab, short bed 1/2 ton

Its not the same length as a Suburban. The burb frames are totally different on the back half.

i kinda like it, i think if you go with all the other trim it would look cool!

Thanks Justpball... I'll have the wheel well trim, tailgate bezel, 91 grill/headlights, back of cab trim, and eventually the side trim. Essentially the Silverado package

I don't mean to hijak the thread, and if there is already a Crew SWB 101 thread, please let me know.

But, is there anything difference with a 1 ton and 1/2 ton? I'll be switching crossmembers and running gear, I'm just worried about the frame itself...

No link, sorry. It isn't too bad. The fenders and radiator support bolt right on. On the cowl panel I had to drill some holes to mount it on the firewall but the hardest part is the firewall. I removed the hinge mount from a 81 up truck and welded it on my 76 firewall. It wasn't that bad at all. I robbed the hood latch cable and mount from a donor truck and installed it on the kick panel inside and it worked out great.

Toomanytoyz, it looks like someone pulled some low 5ers or gn's with that rig. That's always cool to see the beds like that.

Hey Rick thanks. I think my rack is closest to the gray dually but I'm not a big fan of the your truck's rack. I bought a single cab dually for parts and it had a bed like that too. Someone did a pretty good job on it too.

No worries about hijackin the thread... I'm glad guys can get some good info.

damn nice build. i just stumbled across it. this is something i've been kicking around as an idea for the past 14 yrs. i was going to go the same route with a 1/2 ton setup but never got the resources to do it. i'll be looking forward to seeing your final rendition.

Nope. With the cold weather and holidays I haven't touched it. I'm planning to make time now. It needs very little to be on the road.

before you put the bed on, I would suggest boxing the cut on the frame, I know you fish-plated the cut, but I have seen too many trucks bent in the middle(cut frames and factory frames). Some extra protection of what you are tying a lot of time, money and love up in ....the insurance of a box at the welded section is cheap insurance. Just one guys opinion.

The inside of the frame is boxed in. See the last photo, that's the inside of the frame. In the second to last photo you can see the outside of the frame and in the upper right hand corner you can see the inside of the other side. Thanks for the input!
