Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Nice work on the cab. I'm starting on door skins then I'll be replacing the same exact parts you did.
It must be an awesome feeling having all fresh primed metal :metal: |

I just sprayed the botom of my cab with the Raptor bed liner on Tuesday after spending many hours of prep work. Very easy to spray and looks GREAT! Bad cell phone photo, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Looks great.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
That's good to hear, 64chevmn. It looks really good in that photo. How many coats did you do, and how much product did it take to do the floor?
I was hoping to seam seal today, but with the ambient temps being so cold lately, we'd really go through some firewood keeping the shop above 60 degrees for enough time to properly cure it. Instead, we spent the afternoon wirewheeling the lower firewall, cowl vents, and front door pillars. Dad made up a tapped pad to replace the chinsy threaded inserts for dimmer switch, and I tacked that in place. If it warms up at all this week, the frame may take a trip over to the car wash for the first round of degreasing. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180669.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I bought the Raptor kit that comes with 4 bottles of bed liner, a bottle of activator and the spray gun. I used two bottles of the liner material; one for each coat. On the second coat, I turned up the air to 60 psi and shot the bed liner stuff from about 18-inches away to give it a more smooth texture. Covers very well and easy to use.

Looking at the weather forecast for this week, I really doubt that the frame will be going to the car wash or that the cab will see any seam sealer. I have some work scheduled on a customer car this coming weekend, so it may be another week before I get back to work here. |

Good call- supposed to be back to idiotic cold later this week. BTW-Having a Bobcat is cheating!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
We took advantage of the above freezing weather today and disassembled the frame. It's upside down on the trailer along with the front crossmember/suspension for another trip to the quarter car wash for a second round of degreasing. Since it's supposed to dive back into the single digits tonight, it'll likely be a little bit before that happens.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Before you hit the coin car wash do you pre-soak with any type of de-greaser?
|
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Yep. It gets sprayed down thoroughly with de-greaser beforehand. The first round went well, but the underside of everything still needs the crud blown off of it, so it's going back upside down for round two.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
After a four week hiatus due to an especially brutal winter, working on other vehicles, and other obligations, I was able to get back to work on the cab yesterday.
First up, a poll: What does the factory mark on the firewall shown below say? Chevy? A434? Something else? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180926.jpg I cleaned up the firewall, then welded up the holes for the three replaceable line clips, along with the hole for the clutch rod. The factory 3-speed will not be making a reappearance. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180941.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Looking good! Its been cold here too, tougher to get motivated to work on projects and grab ice cubes that say snap on or craftsman. Need a tool box heater!
|
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
No kidding!
|
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Did a little searching here on the site and discovered that the firewall marking was "C1434", the model of the truck (1/2 ton shortbed fleetside).

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent some time in the shop today blocking out the firewall. Like the saying goes, sand until you think you're done...then sand some more.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180944.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180947.jpg I also started brushing on the seam sealer. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180950.jpg Quitting point for today: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180958.jpg The firewall sans thirteen of its original holes and with a really light coat of primer. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180960.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent the morning at a swap meet and the afternoon finishing up sealing seams. Hope to prime and paint the underside next weekend, provided the weather cooperates.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
We took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and put some hours in on the truck. Dad ground down the rivet heads for the transmission crossmember, and we knocked it out of the frame. The frame is ready for blasting.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190057.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190067.jpg We also shot the last coat of primer on the underside of the cab. I'm hoping to get back over there this week once it warms up (it's sleeting here currently) to shoot a couple coats of satin black. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190064.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Progress...:metal:
In the pic with the frame only, (Dad not in the Pic) What is hanging off the deck looking structure, Deer Stand? Looks like a Bomb casing...:bann: or am I just  |

We've finally reached the point where paint starts going on instead of only coming off. :D Shot the first coat of satin black on the underside of the cab tonight. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190093.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...75952789_n.jpg |

Underside of the cab came out great.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks Bomp! I've been watching your progress on Steiner. Looking good!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Looks awesome man. I'm finishing up the second of my door skins and just got all the parts to fix the rot on my cab.

Thanks so much RaceCougar!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
No problem, Bret!
We put in a solid five hours today prepping and priming the firewall, cowl, etc. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190197.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Today we welded up a little rust we found yesterday, removed the rusty A-pillar drip rails, and continued stripping old paint and seam seal.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190231.jpg Stripping away the old seam sealer revealed deteriorated A-pillar drip rails on both sides. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...8ed29ead44.jpg We were both relieved to see that the A-pillars weren't rusted through. They're pitted, but still sound. I'll weld in new drip rails once the cab is sitting upright again. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190239.jpg |

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I borrowed a borescope from a friend yesterday so that we could check the condition of the sheetmetal inside the roof cavity, A-pillars, etc. and determine whether or not we would need to pursue some form of rust treatment in those areas. After all of the rust repair we've done on this cab thus far, I was quite surprised at just how clean it is inside. I did find more insulation in the roof cavity that we'll need to blow/vacuum out of there (thanks, mice), but the sheetmetal is all in great shape. At most, we might use a cavity wax at a later date, but honestly, if the sheetmetal is that clean after the life this truck has led, it should have no troubles with the pampered life it will lead from here on out.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Seam sealed the cowl and shot the A-pillars with weld-thru primer in preparation for the replacement drip rails today.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Does the seam sealer take paint well? I too am worried about underneath my roof and places I can't see. My drip rails are in real good shape with little to no surface rust. My truck had a ton of paint on it. Truck is looking good.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Seam sealer has no trouble being top coated with primer/paint. Actually, I plan to shoot a coat of primer on the firewall/cowl tomorrow morning. Thanks.
