ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
Hey guys, decided to wonder from the dark side (60-66) to keep you posted on one of our customer builds .... its a hodge-podge, but yet very cool.
It's a 1950 Chevy truck, powered by a Nailhead, switch-pitch T400, explorer axle, mustang II, and Dodge 20" spare wheels .... Stay tuned for more pics as soon as I get PhotoBucket organized .... http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa7dfddab.jpg |
Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
Thanks for posting, Chief. Just curious, whose Mustang II kit is it?
|
Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
First off, let me fill you all in on the details.
The truck came to us with the front and rear suspensions done. The booster/master and all hard lines installed. Our job is to pick up the ball, and finish the truck to a "driveable mock-up" state. In other words, the customer wants to cruise it for a bit, enjoy it, make some changes if any ... then have is blow it all apart for full powder/paint. More info soon !! |

Work began by prepping the Nailhead to mate to the TH400 Switch-Pitch tranny. The triangle shape plate was removed, and the crank ground to except the pressed in conversion bushing ....

Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
Very cool build. Love nailheads and it's always fun to see another one on the road.
The switch pitch 400 is a fun trans. I've got one in a '79 Monte behind a 455. I manually switch stall modes using a floor mounted dimmer switch but most guys like automatic operation. Most cars with the switch pitch originally had a throttle position based switch but a vacuum based system similar to what's used with TCC on the 700R4 would work very nicely imo.. |
Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
The owner picked up this used Nailhead from nailheadbuick.com, Buick specialist. It was guaranteed a good used running engine. He also supplied a rebuilt set of rockers, and some other goodies.
We did reseal of the engine, and also a timing chain as it was a little sloppy. After pulling the pan, we got a little scare....Milky, milkshake ! The engine was pressure washer prior to delivery to us, and a look into the crankcase and under intake confirms it was from the wash .... - - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psce530c3c.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psed5e21ef.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfc20dcd.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps71eab9f6.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps321d8b09.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps205f3ceb.jpg - OH NO !!!!! - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f67da3f.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc5f288fa.jpg - "IT'LL BE FINE !!!" - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psafcfc50c.jpg - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc979d09a.jpg |

Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
Jump around a bit .... HARNESS INSTALL
- - Customer brought us a Speedway harness, not too bad for the money. He supplied a 20 circuit (way to much) but it has a harness plug for the accessories, so there isn't a boatload of extra wiring. - - The firewall was smoothed, so mounting to it was out of the question, but I still wanted it high up under dash. I bent some rod, and fabbed up a simple plate to located from side kick to column brace .... Fuse panel is on a tilt to be viewed easily - - Removed door to make my life easier: - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4dbb25a1.jpg - - http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse97adbe5.jpg - - That gonna be perfect ! Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
I love the looks of this truck, especailly the engine. These AD trucks have sooo much head room in the engine bay that this motor set up works great to take up some of that room. Plus it looks cool to boot.
Keep feeding us pics. Marc |

Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
I guessed a "nailhead" meant manual-adjust valves, but not so.
Clue me in on what a nailhead is. I've never seen one. Thx! |
Re: ACC Build: 1950 Chevy
Nailheads are called that cause the valves go straight up and down and are small in diameter by comparison to comparable era V8's and the valve stems are long. Hence, the valves look like nails. I'm no expert but supposedly they use a higher lift cam to make up for their smaller size and make great torque for their time.
You can recognize a nailhead by the fact that the valve covers aren't angled but lay flat on TOP of the engine/heads. Posted via Mobile Device |
