I guess i'll chime in with this, I don't know of a different vehicle line that will bolt in as i've read my share of various installs, but usually around a c10 platform. As a past dealer mechanic i would strongly consider going to the salvage yard and rob a complete crossmember from a newer c20, say mid 70's to late 80's, the later the better. Get everything, gearbox, lines, rag joint, fitting from the back side of the p/s pump (if it's the same basic style). The beauty of doing it this way is preventing a mismatch later down the road, and parts availability later will be reasonable.
With the gearbox change you will end up with a quicker ratio, and a variable ratio too. Frame mods to accommodate the box are needed i believe. The costs to do this should be bearable and pretty user friendly. Maybe even grab the stock sway bar while you are at it. You benefit from gobs of gm trucks in the salvage yard, gm engineering, one stop shopping. I agree it's a fair bit of work, but the first time you drive it you will smile and say it was worth it.
