Parking Brake for 1965 C10
 

Does anybody have a photo of the stock parking brake lever mechanism that was used on a '65 C10? I am refering to the mechanism that fastens to the cross member under the cab.

The figure in the maunals and the one in the LMC catalogue leaves me scratching my head.

Mine is now modified with a TH-350 , but I still have the old parts and can take a pic on the shop floor and you might get a rough Idea. You sent me a pic of your linkage a while back and it was close.
I went with a new crossmember for the automatic and it mounts a little foreward of the original mount for the three speed. I had to get creative and fabricate. As long as it pulls the E-brake cables evenly i think my adaptation will work.

Exactly... thanks guys!

So the good folks at GM used the leverage applied by this mechanism to amplify the hand brake mechanism force.

Looks like I have some fabricating to do.

Could some body tell me the length of the lever arm from its pivot to where the rear brake cable attach, and from the pivot to where the hand brake cable attachs? Armed with this data I can fabricate a similar arrangment?

I can give you my measurement using Bobs pic as a reference.

The bottom horizontal lever is 10" long. The Center pivot is at 5". On the right is another lever that attaches to the ebrake handle (you can see it in my pic, Bob's doesn't have it). That pivot for that is at 3/4".

The middle vertical bar is 5 3/4" long. My first pivot moving towards the rear is at 1 1/4". The second pivot is at 1 3/4" from back end. The spring hole is at 1/2".

The top horizontal bar is 5 1/2" long. The pivot is at center. The 2 rear cable holes are at 1" from ends.

I hope that helps. Any clarification needed just LMK.

Quick note. You can see it in Bob's pic, the vertical bar has holes through out the length of it.

The picture by Big Fenders is what I had in my 64 with the 3-speed.I made a similar arrangement using the new crossmember. The swivel part is a must have to keep the pressure even on both brake drums.

Great thanks for the dimensions and photos.

My remaining question: In the enlarged photo below the bottom 10" long lever, it pivots at the far right hand side, correct? Doesn't show up well in the pictures.

Well, that's a bit strange.. I wonder why they didn't simply put a pivot on the left side.

Yeah, I've seen him on another board I'm on, I was just curious as to why you posted the link to the other thread here when you weren't in it. Just seemed kinda odd to reply to a three year old thread with a link to one you weren't in. Noble cause, though, I get it.

Nice truck btw, I remember reading about you looking for it, I was probably more surprised than you were when you found it!

Thought I'd revive this rather than a new thread.

Has anybody interchanged the '66 intermediate cable with the 63-65 front and rear cables?

Or do I need to buy all new 1966 cables front to back?

Snowbound, I did just that and you will have to "rig" the cables. It would work for a little while but if it were me, I would just buy all og the proper 66 cables.

Along with the cables don't forget there is a 1/4" support rod running forward at an angle to the RH frame where it begins to curve upwards at about the rear cab corner. There are also a couple of brackets that the cable to the brakes run through. The E brake forward cable attaches to one bracket from the left and the support rod attaches to the other from the right. Consider the cable to the brakes in a U and the E brake cable tugging from one side of the U and the rod from the other. Sure looks a lot simpler than the 65 set up but you would need the right parts.

Didn't know there was an intermediate cable. Rear cable one piece attached at each brake and running forward in a U shape. Cable from E brake handle tying in to U cable. Or am I wrong? Will have to take another look out in the cold to confirm.

I bought the '66 rear cables and they are definitely WAY shorter than the '65 rears. About 3 feet compared to 6 feet for the '65.

They are Raybestos parts and they had them on the shelf.

Yes, I forgot about the two short cables with outer jackets back at the backing plates. My other old car of different brand doesn't have those.

I know its a factory safety brake,does anybody really use them?i have a 4 sp manual and planning on parking in gear.im just having trouble finding the parts i need.is anyone out there tried removing everithing completely?thx for your help

It's not just a parking Brake, it's an Emergency Brake. If you're fluid brakes go out at 55 mph, you don't have to downshift yourself to a stop. You just pull the E-brake.
Do not leave home without it!
