Tie Rod Flip (to lessen bumpsteer)
 

I have "old school" stepped A-arms on my truck with stock spindles. Had this setup forever and it works fine except for the excessive bumpsteer. If I flip the tie rod on the spindle, the geometry will be much better.

Anyone here do this?....and if so, what's the easiest and most cost effective way?

I know DJM has a kit with drill, tap, and inserts for like $140 or so......not real interested in that route cuz I'll only do it once!

to bad we couldn't find a few trust worthy guys to go in on a kit ?? like you said your only going to use it once??

You could try this:

tie rod inserts

All you need for this is 3/4" drill bit. I think the taper is the same as ours.

Did anyone ever try this? I ordered a pair today. Hopefully they will fit my tie rods.

I am also interested knowing if these inserts will work because I too have "old school" stepped arms and would like to flip the tie rods.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm interested in finding if anyone has found a bushing that works with the C10 tie rod ends. I'm familiar with the press in bushing from the VW world; it's a common practice on lowered aircooled cars. They look this this:

The other options I see online are for Jeep applications and a Dana 30 option, but no specifics to the taper values or any measurements. Those look like they may work:

Maybe ordering a few different options and checking fitment would be worth it? Seems like this would be a very useful and cheap modification if the specifics can be ironed out. Thoughts?

I’m in to see what others have to say as well. I will be flipping my tie rods but haven’t decided how I will do it yet. On my old bug I just drilled out the spindle from the opposite side with the correct tapered ream. It only left me with half the hole actually grabbing the tierod due to the hourglass hole in it, but it worked just fine. And yeah, it’s a common VW mod. I’m a little more hesitant to just do this on the truck, however, since it’s a tad heavier. Although, in researching it I saw a bunch of offroad Jeep guys doing this as well with no issues. I may give it a try and if I dont like it, I’ll weld up the hole and ream the whole thing out.

If you are running stock wheels you may want to do a quick check to see if the tie rod will clear the rim. Also there is the 73 and up tie rod end that is a bit bigger around and conversion sleeves are our there for the disc swaps. That would allow the taper to be deeper in the spindle for a better hold.

That's a great idea about swapping to the later tierod ends! If I don't like how mine look after reaming out for the stock tierods, I will definitely go this route.

Could you have a machine shop slug the hole and redrill it the other way? I'm thinking drill the hole to a uniform diameter, machine a slug a few thousandths bigger so it'll be a press fit then redrill the taper on the other side.
