Rear end disc
 

Does anyone have a good step by step for doing a rear end disc swap on a GM 12 bolt truck rear end? I bought the kit from CPP and want to try and get installed next week if possible. It says they have the best instruction with the kit but would like to read over some to see what I need for this.:chevy:

Is that a bolt-on kit or welding required?

It's the bolt in. No welding that I know of man! I would love to come to Ga but starting 12 - 6 tomorrow night.
I'm hoping the kit is here tomorrow.:chevy:

Dave I did, would like a little better understanding of how to get the c clips out of the gear. I think I can do it but a little more info would be nice.
Here is the kit. I upgraded to slotted and drilled rotors + the S/S brake lines instead of rubber ones..:chevy:

Getting the rear axle c clips out so you can slide out the axles I assume??
If so it's pretty easy.
Remove rear diff cover
Find and remove small bolt holding in center carrier pin
Slide out carrier pin
Push axles into center of diff allowing c clips to become "free"
Use a long magnet and/or pic to pull clips off axles
Slide out axles

Good looking kit. Did you get the right master cylinder and proportioning valve from them also? Do they have a kit for that?

That is going to be nice Andy. Like Ryan said above the c clips come out real easy.
I think when you get in there you will see what he means. The only real tool needed is to remove that small bolt. Also the gears and center section all stay put. I think I read somewhere you might change gears, that is a whole different project none of that will come loose just the axles slide out.
I know you just replaced some of your brake master cylinder and booster stuff but I believe you will need a different prop valve and probably a dual disk master like Jimmy was asking.

Thanks for the info man that is what I was wanting to know. I should be able to do this in the garage with no problems. I'm not 100% on the gear swap yet Dave. I want to do new bearings and seals though for sure.

Yes when I upgraded I got a new prop valve as well. The kit was $689.00 after all the upgrades. :chevy:

Heading to work tonight my neighbor was outside so we started talking. He has offered his lift to me to do the brake swap. I will be taking my truck over there Friday and starting on taking it a part. He said as long as I was done by the following weekend I could leave it and work a little each day on it. I like that and it's a brand new shop he has built. :chevy:

The kit showed up today so I set to start Friday. Will post pictures as I go I hope. Going to try and have my daughter with me to do the pictures as I do the work. The kit looks nice. Going to put the first coat of red on the calipers tomorrow!:chevy:

Well I spent 10 hrs on the rear end today and I still have no brakes.

CPP's kit leaves a lot to be desired. No instructions as far as details, they have a sequence but no details. The spacers they have in the kit may are may not have to be used. Drivers side looks tight to me but they are on with spacers passenger side wouldn't go on at all so I called CPP and the answer was if they don't work don't use them! Nothing is mentioned in the instructions about not using them. I took them back off and it fit right up. The rotors are tight but I can spin them by hand and that's all they say. I'm hoping after driving it a little they will loosen up some after the pads are worn in. I may take the drivers side off again and use some shims instead of the spacer.
Looking on the drivers side the caliper is up against the bracket, on the passenger side it has a 1/4" gap.

The rear hard lines are for a Chevelle are Camaro they wouldn't fit my tee connection. Had to go get the fittings to adapt over to the bigger fitting. Called about that too! They said they sent the most popular size which is for a car not a truck. If you order this kit make sure you tell them you want the bigger fittings.:chevy:

Here are some other pictures of the install.

Info on rotor: 1" thick and 11.5" diameter. Taking the axles out was a piece of cake! Getting them back together was a real experience! The spider gears decided to fall out so I spent over a hr getting them back in and timed correctly. I learned something though so it wasn't all bad. The c-clips will only go back in the groove one way also.:chevy:

Took the drivers side back off this morning and took the spacer off and put 3 washers on each t bolt to space it out. It was a perfect fit. I will take the spacer and have it shaved down to the same measurement and replace it next time it needs brakes are I feel like doing it again.
The holder for the brake lines wasn't big enough for the S/S flex hose to go through so I had to file it open some for them to fit.
Hope by tonight I have brakes again.

I have rear disc brakes on the truck. They still need some more bleeding I think though. I drove it home and had to tighten up on the pop valve some it was leaking. I guess I need to bleed them all again. The CPP kit would not be my choice again if I ever do another one that's for sure. The clips that hold the brake lines on the axle didn't even fit the hose fittings:chevy:

wilwood kits seem to be nice and complete and also I believe are the only ones with the integrated parking brake.

These kits have the parking brake also just that they are a real pain to adjust. I'm going to try and adjust them some more today if I get time.:chevy:

Andy, they look great on there. I hope they perform as well as they look. Most "kits" need tweaking, as you found out, but we always learn something in the process. Thanks for sharing!!

The kit over all is OK not great but OK. The details are what I hate. I need to do some more bleeding I think. Driving it to work tonight the brake light on the dash would come on so I think I need to bleed the system some more and the pedal isn't that good either. I need to adjust the parking brake cable some more to.:chevy:

Thanks, yea I got the parking brake cable down I had my daughter pumping the brakes for me when I did them and I think she was a little scared of them. I loosened up the park cable a little to much so that has got to be tightened back up some and should be good.
The brakes need to be bleed again as well as she never once said the pedal went to the floor while bleeding them. The tires wouldn't spin though while I was bleeding so I figure I have more to do.:chevy:

yea I think I finally got them all bleed out and adjusted. I ended up having to take the drivers side back off and adjusting the e brake again but I think I have it. I drove it last night to work and it seems to stop pretty good. I can't tell a big difference in normal stopping but if I really mash the pedal it will stop darn quick.:chevy:
