Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Finally!!
I am gonna live my childhood dream!

Today arrived the 59 Fleetside at my friends home, where we make it ready for the Dutch registration.

After that I will lower the truck somewhat ;)

This is going to be a low-budget build, so don't expect a full on showcar, this one is going to be driven!!
As I said, just arrived, it's an original V8 car, according to the VIN.
It has a V8 and automatic, but don't know which block or what automatic...we will see tomorrow.
Only I thought it to be a 1958, see the trim, but the VIN says 1959.
So be it, I am a happy guy!!

Pics follow later, must upload them...

Grtz,

Kees

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks!

It is a "clean", solid truck.
Have some work to make it my own tho.....

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Today's work:

Cleaned the inside of the cab a little, so I know what to do...
Two rust spots in the corners by the front cabmounts, nothing serious and one little thin spot at the left step, that's all.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/P1250471.JPG

The engine is a 350, but can some identify the trans for me?
I think a powerglide, but not sure. Didn't count the bolts yet but have a look:

And some cleaning of the mess, called autowiring...

welcome to the forum, looks like a turbo 400 for the transmission.

RockinKees 09-17-2014 03:29 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Larry!

If it is a Turbo 400, that should be a good trans, or??

Kim57 09-17-2014 03:37 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Here's a GM pan guide that should help identify it.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thank you, Kim!
I found this too, by the look of it, it must be a TH400.

Kim57 09-17-2014 05:31 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

If it's a TH400 that's a very strong trans.
Kim

RockinKees 09-17-2014 06:05 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I've heard that too, Kim.

The trans looked small to me.
Before I had a 81 Chevy Van with a TH350, that looked much bigger.

But maybe I get older and need glases to see right ;-)

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

So today I worked at the wiring a bit.
I have no diagram yet, so it was more cut out what not was connected to anything.
Basicly all wiring:lol:

I didn't get any keys with this truck, so had to demolish the ignition switch.
Made a starter knob out of two relais, one to get current (+15) and from there one to get the starter activated. This works....

For the Dutch title you need turnsignals and a horn, among other things of course, so pulled the "wiring" out of the steering column, well it had a small fire in there in his previous life.
Took the turnsignal switch apart, and soldered on new wiring.
Also checked the light switch, isn't any better, except for the burned wiring...

My plan is to make my own wiring harnass, have done it before so it'll be fine. I therefor need a diagram, and OrrieG is so nice to get me this.
From there I make my own harnass, own colors and a nice fusebox and relais to keep it save. All written down of course!!

Rest me to say, I am Dutch, I also live there, so if my language is not correct, excuse me for that :mm:

I know you all love pictures, so here they are:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

truck looks solid, floor pan is good
needs a total rewire; but that can be expected
the side trim is 58 for sure

but that interior :ack::eek::ack::eek:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Y.../foto%2B15.jpg

RockinKees 09-20-2014 01:34 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Interior is allready gone, I developed a bit asthma in there

I thought it was a '58 too, bought it as '59, so says the title....
The truck is pretty solid, only a few places that need to be done.

Today I tried to start, probably after 8 years of standing, and you know?
It runs:metal:
But boy, it's loud!
There are only two cherrybombs on two exhausts of three foot length...

After that we pushed it at a car bridge or ramp (how do you call it??) and found out that there's an old damage, the driveshaft is bent. The PO must have felt that I would think?
Other than that I need new brake hoses, and indeed a complete wiring.

No Problem

1958Warrior 09-20-2014 10:46 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Maybe the PO did feel the vibration from the bent drive shaft ...., that could've been his thinking he needed more down force , by added that wing on the back.
I'm pretty sure you could loose that thing and not notice any handling drawbacks.

CHEERS!

Hahaha, I think you are right 1958Warrior!!!

I'm also pretty sure I loose that wing... ;-)

RockinKees 09-24-2014 01:42 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Didn't find a driveshaft that fits...so I ordered two conversion U-joints. A friend had an Heavy duty driveshaft of a Chevy Van lying around.
I only have to move the engine forward, about 11/16", is a good thing because the distributor sits almost against the bulkhead, problem solved!

Next was the frontaxle, leftside was loose at the leafsprings. The bolt in the center of the leafs was broken, made a new one.
I also did get my new brake hoses, so that's for tomorrow!
Also made a new eye for the rightside shock, was broken off.

Next on the list is a radiator, mine is leaking. I can let it fix or I can order a new one.
I thought of ordering a new, aluminium one from Speedway Motors. These radiators are very, very expensive overhere!!
Tips about the radiator are welcome!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/P1250504.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-u...o/P1250505.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2...o/P1250506.JPG

As you might have read, this is only to get my Dutch registration. Plan is to put a Jag IFS and IRS under the truck.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/P1250507.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-f...o/P1250510.JPG

Well, you can see where it's leaking, don't you?

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice fix on the shock mount.
I'd probably replace the radiator.
Kim

RockinKees 09-30-2014 02:30 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Ordered a new radiator today, coming from Speedway Motors in about 10 days.

Made a small frame for the fueltank and fitted it at the back between the framerails, and plumbed it. I only have to make a fillerneck. This is temporaraly going to be at the back above the rear bumper.
In the near future there should be a filler with a nice door so you don't see it right away. How and where I don't know yet...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q...o/P1250531.JPG

First I took the fuelpump out of the tank, it was broken, and put in a suction tube. So I hope the mechanical pump at the engine does the job..

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/P1250532.JPG

Test fitting fueltank..

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/P1250533.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...o/P1250535.JPG

Fits like a glove :metal:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6...o/P1250537.JPG

New temporaraly plates to get my engine 1 inch forward and a bit higher at the front.
When I get my IFS, I build new motormounts and do it the right way ;)

Again a few points nearer to my Dutch Title :bann:
I'm getting there....

Kim57 09-30-2014 05:17 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Fuel tank fits real nice.
Kim

RockinKees 10-01-2014 12:39 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Kim, that's all I need, a small fueltank.
In the near future I will ride on liquid gas (LPG or GPL, what's it called in English?) LPG is much cheaper, it's a third of the regular petrol price, so this fueltank is only a backup for when I run out of LPG.

Engine and trans are at their place, with the new enginemounts I had to adjust the trans crossmember...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O...o/P1250538.JPG

One inch to the front and 3/4 inch up. This is the leftside of the engine, you have an idea how it sits.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/P1250539.JPG

Even for temporarely fitment you must do it right ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q...o/P1250540.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-G...o/P1250541.JPG

This should work for a few weeks!
Tomorrow I will make a fillerneck for the fueltank and start with an exhaust, so it is almost ready to start up.
Next on the list is all new wiring.

We're getting there!

Kim57 10-01-2014 04:15 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice job on the mounts.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

3 Attachment(s)
Made an exhaust of things we had lying around, hoping it to be a little less loud.
When I change the front and rear axle, I also going to make a stainless steel exhaust with "normal" mufflers ;)

The fueltank is now ready, fillerneck in place above the rearbumper.

All I have to do now is adjust the parkingbrake, wire the whole car... mount a radiator (it's on his way), start up and take it to the station to get my Dutch title :metal:
But that should take another month or so. I'm sure I forgot something along the way....

I'm keep on building!!

Are catalytic converters a requirement?

RockinKees 10-04-2014 11:19 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

No Gary, but you haven't seen the inside of the converters ;)

We changed them a bit and hoping it be a little less loud now.
We shall see next week....

I see, just wondering why the extra pieces in the exhaust. Great truck project, by the way!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks!

Most is for getting my Dutch title on the truck, when that's been done, I'm realy going to work on it. Jaguar IFS and IRS, little lower, another color, you know it....
Then the fun begins!

Katrina/10 10-04-2014 11:34 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Sounds like a good plan. There are some photos of Jag swaps on this board, hopefully you can find all the parts you need.

RockinKees 10-04-2014 11:52 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I already have the axles, with rack and pinion and the brakebooster and MC from the same car.

Pics of the swap are difficult to find on the board, I did get a lot of good pictures and info from Nev68 on this board, he told me to contact him if I had any questions about this.

I am very thankfull that people you don't know in person are such a great help!!!
Thats why I read a lot on here, I learn every minute !
The best forum I've ever came across!!

Having a good time when I'm not wrenching on my dreamcar :sexy:

You're off to a good start, then. People who like old trucks usually like helping other people with old trucks!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Today my new radiator arrived from the States, that was a quick one!
Also in the package was a proportional valve for the Jag brakes.

Jaguar don't use this valve in the V12 after 1983, but the Pick-ups are a bit lighter at the back, better to use one I think ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...o/P1250545.JPG

The truck now starts, runs, stops and shifts!
The shifting was a bit of a problem, because the linkage was a mess.
Made a new simple linkage (temporary), and yes, we can drive forwards and backwards!

Tomorrow the first testdrive...wish me luck!

Kim57 10-08-2014 07:46 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice looking parts.
Good luck on the test drive.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

It was a busy day at the office ;)

Put in an old radiator to let the engine run a while and to make a short testdrive.
Well, the engine runs pretty good, sounds okay, but have some trouble with the alternator, that makes a noise I don't like.
We'll tackle that later.

Two short videos for those who like to see:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foRP...ature=youtu.be
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZPT...ature=youtu.be
You can hear the noise from the alternator in the second vid.

After the short testdrive I began to make mounts for the new radiator, underside mount is ready, upperside I have to make.

Grind it in and bent at 90 degree angle:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-w...o/P1250546.JPG

Weld it
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/P1250547.JPG

And make this the underside...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-n...o/P1250553.JPG

So you can put the radiator in his place like this:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...o/P1250554.JPG

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice job on the radiator mount.
Kim

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thank you Sir!!

When I said this is a budget build, I meant it...
Got a "new" battery for free, only thing is that it won't fit the stock battery box. So I measured the old box, measured the new battery and build one myself ;)
Parts are from a secondhand store and some steel strips out of a building supply store. The weldinggas to make this is more expensive!!

Hope I measured right and the box bolts right in....We will see Monday!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/P1250556.JPG

Completion when we go work on the axles and chassis....

Kim57 10-11-2014 05:46 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Looks good.
Nothing wrong with building on a budget.
Kim
