Thanks Joe. Have you tried the HTE spray guns? I saw another thread on here and them at Harbor Freight. Was thinking it might be a good upgrade to my purple gun.

Thanks. It is Kirker 2k epoxy shot with the $10 purple gun from Harbor Freight.

Got all my brakes in. I hope they don't leak like crazy.

Clean and paint and clean and paint and some reassembly.

Got it back on four wheels. Need to trim my pinch weld off now. This isn't all the way down. I need some weight on the front to collapse the bags completely down as well.

Re: Used Parts Build

I had been going back and forth on my transmission for a while. I didn't want to try to rebuild it since I have no knowledge of transmissions (though I will try to rebuild one eventually). I've been trying to save money for some other things and didn't want to drop a few grand on a new one. The local pick and pull has them for $120 and for another $30 you can get a year warranty so I figured I'd go try to find one and give it a shot. I found a clean looking one at the yard and was happy to see a rebuild tag on it. Hopefully it works well.

Made a tab out of stainless for a ground strap. Someone later told me stainless isn't the best for it but Ill give it a shot and replace it later if it doesn't work.

Swapped out my tie rod ends for a shorter set out of a International Scout to adjust for my narrowed arms.

Got my seats back in and driver door on.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5e0ac961_b.jpg
Made a removable cross member for the front of my frame.

Bought some paint for my exhaust manifolds.

Ordered a bunch of parts and am waiting on those before I put the engine and trans back in (hopefully for the last time!).

Spent time smoothing out my hotside
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6431af72_b.jpg
Then painted it
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b9ef6f0_b.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2dbc2c40_b.jpg
Cleaned the trans and painted the torque converter
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c38a4cac_b.jpg
Got a slop yolk to convert it but its a bit long
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5a67db66_b.jpg
From what I read I need to counter bore it and cut it down a bit. Somewhere I read I had to pull the tailshaft and remove the o ring to lubricate the splines. Anyone ever do this conversion?

Got the engine in. Hooked up the battery cables. Got the power steering hoses in. The rear trans fitting is too close. Ordered some banjo style fittings that will be here next week.

Made a turbo mount.

It's just because you're moving on to the next phase in the project & closer to completion. Where it was once tasks 1, 2, or 3 it's now 2, 4, & 6

... see!!:smoke: that is why when I make my "to do" list I just put a dot before the task!

I need someone to work on 2/4/6 while I keep redoing 1/2/3...

Not a bad idea!

As usual with life I make good progress then work/life get in the way and raid my wallet. Luckily I spent my truck money first! Got my injectors and fuel rails. Went with Deka 80's and some rails that the sloppy mechanics guys run.

Really happy I made an access panel here. Really pissed I didn't do one for the rear fitting...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...078315a5_b.jpg
I made this little bracket that bolts to the back of the head. It holds the transmission dipstick and is the support for the exhaust.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6d6b9d12_b.jpg
Started to lay out my harness. I wish I did this sooner since I don't even remember who I had do it and it isn't labeled the best...

Re: Used Parts Build

Feels like I went a long time without updating this thing. Ive been working on a bunch of boring little stuff that isnt worth pictures but here is an update.

Moved my coils since the wires would have to be too close to the exhaust for my liking. Used some light mounts and ICT Billet relocating brackets.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c292896b_b.jpg
Mounted them to my inner frame stiffener.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e648b0f8_b.jpg
My junkyard trans had a hole from where they drained it. I was too cheap to buy a new pan so...

Good deal...

Why would they poke a hole in the pan? That's dumb.

I was thinking the same thing. Drain plug is what, about 6-8" away?

tinydb84 12-03-2020 07:56 PM

Re: Used Parts Build

Im guessing its quicker? They do it to all the trans but not all the engines.

Re: Used Parts Build

The hole has to do with environmental compliance for waste that effect storm water run office. It is quicker and more effective at draining the MOST oil out of a transmission when it is brought in to a yard. If you look at the plug on his pan above, the drain plug would leave a significant amount of fluid in the pan if that is the only method to drain the oil. ALSO, a lot of transmission pans from the factory did not have drain plugs and the quickest and cheapest why is the poke a hole in the pan.

I understand about the environmental concerns & actions. Poking a hole in a 'good' spot on a non-drain plug equipped pan I get. Poking a 2nd hole inches away from a drain plug I don't get when tilting the object nets the same effect.

Re: Used Parts Build

It sucks that all these pans now have a new hole that most drain plug kits wont fit. So people that cant weld have to buy a new pan.

Have you ever really talked to the guy at the yard that does the work to get them on the yard for us to pillage parts off of? Let's just say those guys are not typically the sharpest tool in the shed...

Re: Used Parts Build

Fought for a few days with a handful of bad sensors right out of the box. Replaced two crank sensors and two cam sensors. Drove me nuts because it wouldnt start and wasnt throwing any codes. Finally pulled the sensors from my brother's engine since I knew they were good.

Drove it last night. No bed, no lights, no license plate, no insurance, not sure it would stop, front bags leaking, etc...but I made it around the block!

The trans is whining while in gear and idling. Seems that is something that happens with 4l80's. Ill run it until it breaks for now. Hope to get it registered and the bed on in the next week or two so I can try to get some shake down miles going in circles around my block.

Anyway here are some of the update pics below.

Couldnt find a van speedo so I got an S10 one to fit. Took a bit more cutting than I wanted but it was cheap and cheap is good for me!

96 S10. I figured if they could make it work for the 67-72 then I could make it work for me. I wish I could have found a van one like yours but it works!

Re: Used Parts Build

So my torque converter in my junkyard trans is bad. Never heard that sound before...I ordered one but it wont be here for a few days so I did a couple other things that I had parts for:
Upgraded my headlights to modern jeep ones that I saw in another thread. Ordered some relays so I can get full power to them.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...72a8357f_b.jpg
Saw these little LED's at harbor freight when I went to go buy a transmission jack (scored an open box one for half price). The lights seemed to be nice quality and were pretty cheap so I got them for under my hood.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b979b77d_b.jpg
I wanted to be able to pop my hood at a cruise night and get some attention. I think they will work.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d5c563ca_b.jpg
Took this pic in a closed garage with no lights on. I ordered a switch so they will turn on automatically when you pop the hood.
