Having a bit of trouble finding the GMC codes.
I don't have a SPID sheet just the VIN #
Where can I find the Serial # on my truck.
Apparantely the VIN is not the same I.D.

* Stamped on a metal plate attached to the top front of the driver's side door frame.
* Stamped on top of the left (driver's side) frame rail, near the steering gear.
However, this stamped number may only contain the sequential serial number. You can decode the VIN at one of the following web pages: http://www.americanclassic.com/paint.htm
http://www.americanclassic.com/paint_test.asp

Also check out www.classictruck.com, I used it on my 62'Chevy. Just click on "Vin Decoder". Type in your vin number, and thats it.

how can you tell what motor the truck originally came with?

but that just tells me what motor was avaiable for my truck, not what actually came in it.
I have a 283 in there now but the guy I bought it from says the guy HE bought it from installed it from whatever it had before. Has to be a 235 or 283 I guess...was just curious.

ok will do.

Guess what Im thinkin is that someone restoring a vehicle could slide an engine in there from another same year truck and claim the truck is a numbers matching vehicle. But there is no way to tell if its the actual engine, just the same year and size.

Re: 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Specs & Engine/Trans/Axle ID's

Can anyone shed any light on how I could identify what type of rear end I have in my 66 GMC Suburban? I'd like to figure out what gear ratio I have without pulling the cover.

Thanks,

Re: 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Specs & Engine/Trans/Axle ID's

Jack the rear wheels off the ground, mark the driveshaft with a piece of chalk. Turn the rear wheels and count how many times the drive shaft makes a full revolution for every 1 revolution of the rear wheel

1Bad62Pro/Street 01-20-2010 01:27 PM

Re: 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Specs & Engine/Trans/Axle ID's

There should be a tag on there showing the gear ratio. The rear ends have stamped ID's as well.
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/pi...ictureid=18056
http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...locations2.gif
Raise and support the rear of the truck with jack stands.
Read the metal tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts.
This tag, which is always present (if not removed by a previous owner), will indicate the gear ratio that came with the vehicle originally.
This tag may not be valid if the previous owner has changed the ratio, and you will have to remove the cover to find the gear ratio.

I have a question about the rear end codes. According to the tech sheet there are letter codes ex. WA or WC that tells the ratio, Where do you find that stamped code, I have looked all over mine and cannot seem to find it???
