Brakes
 

Would like to hear what brake setup yall are using. Especially with big tires. Ive got a conglomeration of pieces from 70-74. My truck stops OK but sometimes I wish I had a little more power. Anybody have a setup where they've ditched the factory proportion valve and ran an aftermarket one like a Wilwood?

I have 36" tires. Don't know if you consider that big, or not. IMO, its sorta 'middle sized'

Anyway, I currently am running the stock '72 half ton disc/drum setup. Ive never really had any problems with it, except for a master cylinder failure, that resulted in a little trip over the curb, and through the ditch!

I can't blame that on any shortcoming, in the brakes performancewise, as it was more of a failure. To be expected on a 100K mile truck, I 'spose.

I am planning a conversion to 3/4 ton running gear, with a home brewed 4 wheel disc setup, likley using front calipers, as per the common procedure.

Id be interested to hear more details, on what pieces you are currently running...

I have a 71 3/4 ton and I'm running the stock front disc and have the 12"x2-1/2" drum in back. Tires are 35's. Just went through and replaced everything including proportioning valve
now brakes work excellent. (just a tip - completely bleed the system of all old fluid)

Im running 36s too. My rears seem to lock up a little early. Maybe when I put my bed back on they will be allright.

The only place I could find the valve was through the local chevy dealer. I think it was about $90 or so. I was having the same problem with the rear brakes locking up. Even after I replaced everything they were still locking. After a thorough bleeding of the system everything works great.

Im thinking' you can buy an aftermarket prop valve for about $40...

You just put it in the line, and use it to regulate the amount of flow to the rear brakes, if Im thinking right...

unlike factory one, it would be adjustable, which will help compensate for non stock pieces, in the system...

Also I would agree that hving the box off, would tend to aggravate rear brake lockup.
