Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

2 Attachment(s)
I have found a transfer case to replace the one I have, but the adapter is different from mine, as is the shifter thingamajig. The new one is from a 67 3/4 ton truck that had a SM465 and a 327 motor which is the same as in my 68. Will the "new" one bolt in to my adapter? If nothing else, i could rebuild using one for parts? Mine is the one in the truck. THANKS!

I'm not aware that different versions of the T221 were produced - the only difference I'm aware of is with the adapter. I'm pretty confident you can bolt that tc to your adapter. You'll be able to swap the shifter linkage from your tc to the new one if necessary.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback and plan to make an offer.

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

i purchased the TCase and tranny as a unit. The seller didn't want the tranny so it came with the TC. I took every bolt off the adapter that holds it to the TC but i cant get them apart. What am I missing? What else do I have to do to separate the units? Do i have to remove the front or rear input or output shafts?? BTW the cases are both filled with oil and seem to shift easily. i am making this up as i go, so i appreciate any help i can get!

There should be 8 bolts total from T-case to adapter plus the shifter linkage. If you're positive that you have that disconnected then try shocking the case and adapter with a rubber mallet. Smack away at different areas and it should unstick.

Good luck.

I got the T-case separated from the tranny and the adapter! That was a relief. I can see that this one is in better shape than the one on my truck now. What is a good place to find gaskets for this T221??

Not sure of whether you can easily find gaskets, I recall I made a number of them for mine.

I just had mine rebuilt, and getting the gaskets and bearings was a non issue.
The gaskets you can get from rockauto.com, or most any good transmission parts houses can get them for you. The bearings are nothing special, just your average Timken brands work.
In my case, I replaced all the gaskets/seals and bearings with new ones sourced via mail order.

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

Guys- I really appreciate the help. The only question I have now really has to do with the adaptor. I know they came in different lengths because mine is shorter than the one from the donor, but I assume the bolt pattern is the same?? The tip on rockauto is solid, thanks for that! Tomorrow I am taking the truck to a 4wheel specialist that did work on the truck years ago for their thoughts on swapping the t-cases; will keep you posted.

As you're replacing gaskets be sure to use thread sealant on the majority of the bolts. Most aren't blind.

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

It appears that in the posted pics, one of the cases is on a sm465 transmission and the other is on a sm420 trans, if so the adapters are not interchangeable.

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

I know the adaptors are different, but the t-cases both have the same tag "Rockwell T 221" Wouldnt the new one bolt to my original?! The difference appears to be in length of the t-cases primarily; are the bolt patterns different, etc?

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

Yes the t-case should bolt to either adapter, but the other adapter won't bolt to your trans if it's off a sm465.
The transmission on the right looks like a sm420 in the pic.

Re: Will this "new" Rockwell 221 fit?

After rereading the first post I see that you have the Sm465 in your truck, it appears that the second is a Sm420 from what I can see in the pic, sorry about the confusion.
The transfer case from the 420 should bolt to the 465 but the adapter (the piece between the trans and transfer case) won't interchange between the two transmissions.
