Will a 700r4 matchup to a NP205?

Ok, I posted on here last week that I bought a 72 Highlander 4x4. Lets just say that it turns out I'm a bit of a sucker. I guess I got a little too excited.

At least I do have a decent rolling frame and transfer case. I am now in need of a donor truck with a good cab at a minimum and hopefully a worthy motor/trans. The other body parts I can get.

I'm going to look at one on Monday probably that is local and it has a 700R4 and a freshly built motor.

Are there any issues using that transmission in a 72 LWB frame with a NP205 transfer case? Thanks for any and all help.

You will need a NP205 for a TH350 and the adapter.

The NP205 was originally matched up to a TH350,

Can you recommend a source for the adapter?

From what I recall, the 700R4 output shaft is a little longer than the TH350 output shaft, but they're both 27-spline shafts. Lots of people make adapters for various transmission to bolt to an NP203 because the doubler kit is so popular, but I don't know any that make a specific 700R4 to 205 adapter.

The rear bolt pattern for the 700R4 is the same as the TH350, but the output shaft is longer. So you could replace the output shaft with a specialty shaft that makes it identical to the TH350 output, and then use stock components. The output shaft is less than $200, but it requires a transmission rebuild.

The other option that I've heard about (but haven't seen personally) is to buy a specialty adapter used for replacing a TH350 with a 700R4, then cut about 1/4 inch off the output shaft of the 700R4, and life is golden.

7-35a is what I did to put 700r4 to a np205. Makes it a little longer but will not hurt.
Hope this helps.

ORD is also offering the correct length output shaft for use with the th350 adapter.

Or there is always the Advance Adapters short TH700R4 output shaft:

You can also use this if you don't want to rebuild the tranny
