Best Carb and intake on a 1970 rebuild 350?
 

I have a Carter 650 Carb with a riser on the motor now because the mismatch to the intake is a lot. Now that I'm having the engine rebuilt I'm not sure what carb to use and if the existing intake will work. BTW the Carter 650 was free and I was trying to get the truck running to evaluate what was good and what needed to be replaced.

Hard to go wrong with an Edelbrock Performer intake and a rebuilt Q-jet. But realistically, there is nothing wrong with the setup you have unless you are working on a max-effort performance build.

I run a Weiand 8004 on my Jimmy with a JET Stage II 750 Q-jet which used to be my favorite intake because of the price/performance but it's not a deal like it was. I like Holleys for performance application, but prefer Q-jets on trucks for the most part. FWIW, I have Edelbrock/Carters on my 350 Chevy powered inboard ski boat and the AMC 360 in my '79 CJ-5 and find them perfectly suited to those apps.

Performer or Performer Air-Gap (less driveable in cold weather I think) plus a Q-Jet.

As a second choice, Edelbrock AVS series (old Carter AFB).

Edelbrock performer or a performer EPS and a Holley 1850 (600 cfm), vac sec, manual choke.

Another vote for the Edelbrock performer and the Quadrajet. It's going to be reliable and work as well as anything out there.

I've been happy with the Edelbrock Performer already mentioned; and can recommend the Quick Fuel Technology Slayer Series 600 CFM Vacuum Secondary.

I like the clear sight windows on both fuel bowls and the parts are readily available and reasonably priced. The design seems to be based on the Holleys - to the point that I have found the parts to be interchangeable. In my opinion the QuickFuel units appear to be made of a stronger alloy (for threads) than the old Holleys (which were 100% Zinc) QuickFuel are more of an aluminum.

I added a 1/2" spacer plate between this carb and the manifold for a little more clearance for the accelerator linkage.

This one is $318 delivered from Summit; and they usually have it delivered the next day for free if the order is placed before noon or so.

Scratch that... I just remembered - the 1/2" spacer plate was to make clearance for the vacuum hose connection that connects to the brake booster - not for clearance for the accelerator linkage. This spacer was not needed on my previous Holley 4160 on the same manifold, but for the QuickFuel the carburetor base thickness is slightly thinner and so the spacer was needed.

Another thing you may consider is the Edelbrock 2101 Performer is a spreadbore and the Quickfuel (like the Holley's) is squarebore; but that 1/2" spacer plate also acts as an adaptor for spread to square.

So I think that is probably an advantage of a Quadrajet over the QF or Holley 4160; being spreadbore it matches the Edelbrock and OEM manifolds better.
