I understand your theory with why you'd put the boards on the inside, but in doing so you'd lose width by the thickness of the boards...since the inside edge of the stake pocket is the outside edge of the box.

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to make a removeable ladder-type rack for mine so I can haul 20' lengths of steel on it without having to remove the tool box.
