We have a built in propane powered generator and we heat with propane, making it convenient to power the generator. The engine is air cooled, so we of course don't have a cooling system to maintain. A battery heater and auto start every Tuesday afternoon helps make sure the system will function when needed.
Sounds like diesel is more convenient for you and the industrial level systems are diesel powered, so that may be a good way to go.
