woo hoo. Hit the "H"

I was driving home from the airport late last night and the highway was pretty empty. Pu the foot into the throttle at one point just to see what it would do with the new cam. Before I could chicken out it wrapped that speedo needle all the way around to the "H" on the speedometer. My estimate is thats in the 120 mph range. Thats with 4600 lbs and the tailgate up. Like a hot knife through butter.

I got mine to the "P" once, before I did a lot of the motor work. It's amazing how much power it takes to get one of these trucks to go that fast. Not only are they heavy(mine's only 3820, I love shortbeds), but they have the aerodynamics of a parachute

Too funny!!! So how far will a Speedo wrap around??
Anyone tested one further than Mike?

I am going to try after a few mods!! There is some great
spots to really kick it in around here.

Hey Mike were you on Hwy 16 or out on the Interstate??

It'll go faster than that. Thats just where I chickened out :-) . I was on Hwy 16 betweenn Gig harbor and Port Orchard and was running at 4700 rpm at the time I stopped pushing it. The last time I tried this it was with a smaller runner intake and a smaller cam but the real problem was that the HEI was cutting out pretty bad at about 95 mph. I since switched to an MSD module in my HEI and all the hi rpm missfiring went away immediately. What amazed me was how fast it got to 120 mph . The engine wasnt really even straining to get there. I doubt it took even a half a mile to get from 70 to 120 which certainly wasnt the case before the cam change to he solid lifter XS274s I am running now. I will say that I lost about 3 mpg on the highway though. In the next month I hope to be getting a new set of Pro Action heads to replace my WP's which should kick me up to around 460-480 HP. I'm also limited by the carburetor and a switch to a 750 holley is imminent. I'll see how it does then but I'm fairly sure I wont be running it that fast again any time soon. Its a stable truck all right but its still like riding in a brick through a hurricane when your'e going that fast in one of these.

Years ago I got the Jimmy up to ~108 with 35" MT Baja beltes (S speed rated to 112 at least...) 4800 rpm. And that was it. Aerodynamics and max torque met head on.

You want a fun rush? I raced a tuner one night. He didn't know what to think when the diesel started to wind up.

I had the GMC right inbetween the M and the P once on a Texas back road...I kinda chickened out going any faster, but she was still tugging. Muine is just shy of 4000 pounds. (kinda porkey for a short bed huh?)
I always thought of the aerodynamics more akin to a barn door.

Believe it or not, I once got my truck up to the 20-30. I chickened out at that point, but right before I let off, I hit the pedal to the floor a couple more times and it had plenty more juice. Man that 327 was yelling! And these trucks do have a very light scary feel at that speed. It was on an open highway in NM where you can see for miles. Funny thing,--I caught up to and passed a 67-72, and scared the heck out of two guys. It's also very scary to see how fast you catch up to cars doing regular speeds, it seems like they're standing still!

I had my 94 up to 90 once. Whats so amazing about that you ask? Maybe it had to do with the fact that I had a car trailer behind me, with a complete 73 Nova on it. That was cool to know that it would pull to that speed. The real funny part was when I stopped to get gas and the fox box mustang that I passed a few miles back stop at the same place to get gas. The driver was like "Damn, your crazy! You passed me like I was standing still." So maybe I am.............

So does anyone want to buy my truck? Its been babied it whole life. Never been over 75MPH.

You people scare me. Not really, I got my 71 around to the 5 mph mark one night (late on a long straight stretch) well not that long, I live in WV and there aren't too many straight roads. Anyway, I had just built the truck and had a 455 big block Buick in it and the oil pump went out at that speed. I drove it on home clunking way down deep in the motor. Pulled it out, sold some parts off it on ebay and installed a small block 350. Havn't drove that fast since.

When I was in HS, I went past the 100 mark, but it was late at night, and I got to thinking what if a deer jumps out in front of me. She was still pulling pretty good.

On the other hand, driving my car at 90 is like driving my wifes car at 60. :P

Cool....chev stories! Mike p, a 3/4 ton truck running at 120 + is pretty impressive!........yes, it will go faster, just depends on how d@mn crazy you are Im not too crazy anymore @ 45.....10- 15 yrs ago, I was crazy as hell! the mark on the speedo dont mean chit(who knows what it reads when its rollin on the 2nd time around?)....you are on the money, the tach & the math dont Lie....drop it, chop it,& lay the pillars back.....push a" brick"through the air @ 140, with a 425 hp BB /500 ftl b tork , yes it gets to be a lot freaky @ 5800 revs. The best part was that d@mn ford that was playin with me on that long stretch of hyway,He looked like the @ss end of the chicken over the fence first after 100 mph........crazyL

Gee Mike, I thought you had a overheatin' problem Hittin' the H like that!!!!! The hardest I ever ran mine against a 68 with a stout 327. We were up past 100 on I-64 thru Charleston one night. He pulled me pretty good but still was fun.
