Stepside question?

Trying to find a clean stepside for my 71 build. But I keep only finding 80s stepside beds in my area. Will the 71 steps and fenders bolt up?

Re: Stepside question?

Beds are very similar, but bolt hole positions are different and the '67-'72s have a usable running board or side step. The '73-'87 squarebodies had a little foothold, but nothing you could bolt jerry cans onto. The support brackets are way different too.
Tailgates might be identical, but
I've never tried using non-67/72 parts.

Re: Stepside question?

Bill Palf went through this and shows what is involved using the 73-87 step beds.

It's not just a matter of drilling some holes to mount the fenders if you want it to look like a 67-72.

Re: Stepside question?

Thanks guys I'll keep looking for a 67-72 bed. By chance will the front panel and tail gate still work with 71 sides?

Yes front panels and tailgates are the same.
Let's keep this going and find out...

Are the rear main sill all the same throughout the years?

also are all the support cross sills the same though the years.

I'm thinking 55 all the way through to 87 tailgates and front panels are the same.

Re: Stepside question?

If you want a real nice stepside bed just build on from parts from Mar-K.
Member hot trux did this on his 68 stepside.
And the repop stepside fenders are really nice.
This is not a cheap process, but it sucks to give a ton of money for a oem bed and fine rust holes between the fenders and the bedsides when you pull it apart to paint.
Mar-k is in Oklahoma and builds and sells all you need to assemble a box from scratch..

Re: Stepside question?

Keith Ol Rover is in ontario canada so shipping may be a killer if they will even ship there. I've recently read that some vendors won't.
On the other hand finding a decent bed up there to use could be expensive too.
