I got a scary email

I got an email from a car dealer asking me to rate my experience buying my new 2018 Jeep Renegade from them.

One problem. I didn't buy one. And they are in Maryland which is not too close to me.

So I've got to wonder. Is someone using my credit and buying expensive things. I've heard the stories about people buying houses under someone else's name and things like that.

These days I think that we all worry about identity theft or some kind of scam/fraud.

So I called the dealer and after being transferred 3 times was lucky enough to actually speak to the guy that sold the Jeep. He remembered doing it.

He said that he had sold it to a local guy that just happens to have the same name as I do. He read off his email address and it was one digit different than mine.

Now I got their phone number off their website. They are a legitimate dealer. So it just looks like someone messed up the email address since they are so much alike.

Whew !!

Re: I got a scary email

Someone prolly put the wrong email or maybe it was typed wrong. You could always call and find out. When I as doing sales we used Dealer socket. The automated system would email what we asked and would let me know when the customer received the email, opened the email or clicked on any links in the email. Very intrusive, but help close a sale.

I would call and verify for personal security.

I'd be scared to wake up and find I bought a Jeep. That's gotta be worse than getting drunk in Vegas and getting married to a $5 hooker

Re: I got a scary email

My dad is 77 years old and used to drive a green 1965 Chevy swb stepside. He got a letter a few years ago from some city in California stating that if he didn't pay his parking tickets on this truck, they would issue a warrant for his arrest. He called the number on the letter telling them he had never been to California, and if he did go it wouldn't be in that truck as he had sold it years before. They believed him and told him not to worry about the letter.

Our question is......was it that same truck all these years later and who is driving it around????

The newest scam is they go online with your id get your house info cause deeds and mortgages are recorded online, get on your deed and mortgage the equity out of your house and because you are still on the deed you get stuck paying the bill

Re: I got a scary email

I got a knock on the door a few years ago - it was a someone I didnt know asking for me. I was being served for non payment of a line of credit. Problem for me was I never took out a line of credit.
Seems someone walked into a bank in British Columbia a few months prior (I live in Ontario), took out a line of credit for $15k, used my social insurance number as i.d., and was never heard from again.
The collection agency tracked me down and voila - my weekend got a lot worse. I had to do a lot of detective work to figure out where/when this happened and eventually got clear of this (work records show I wasn't in BC at the time).
I now am very careful where any documents with details are left/disposed of.

Re: I got a scary email

I have a dumb e-mail address I came up with. It starts with ckryder. It was a combination of my interest in GM trucks and Harleys with C.C. Rider in mind except it's a K instead of a C and I spelled Rider like the truck rental company... which is why I always have to say "With a Y like the truck rental company". Get it? So anyway, I have gotten e-mails for C Kryder. Who'd a knew my way out there concocted e-mail is some sucker's actual name! *

My daughter had her identity stolen. Some woman bought two high dollar cars in one day. It put my daughter through hell. The police with their lack of concern about an actual crime are as bad as the thief. She had to travel to the county where this woman was from several times, loosing work, and she has a three year old son. When she asked the sleezebag car dealer what he thought of the same person deciding to come back for a second car the same day he said as long as the credit is good they don't care.

* Probably a really cool sucker... I mean person. No offense intended to that family intended.

Catching and charging people with identity theft isn't profitable enough. Police care about the crimes that pay their salaries. High fine, low effort. Takes a lot of resources to to track down an identity theif if they have any sense about them.

Well she had all they needed to know about the thief. All they had to do is go get her. Are you really making excuses for the police not enforcing the law? Are you ok with law enforcement being about revenue over justice and protection of citizens? Police forces are public service agencies, not for profit businesses. Our taxes pay their salaries.

Re: I got a scary email

Oh no I'm not ok with it. Just seems to be the way it is. They should be able to do their job off of the money they get from taxes. Their job is enforcement, not making money. It shouldn't be their concern.

I'm from Baltimore. 309 murders in the city last year. There are so many problem with law enforcement here. I don't know how many police commissioners we've had over the past 5 years. Corruption all over the place. There are so many issues that need to be resolved before everything 'works'.

Re: I got a scary email

Yeah, I don't know about other cities but Baltimore sure has it's issues with corruption on all levels. Once the thugs get locked up they run the jail. I think this was Baltimore City my daughter had to deal with. She is in PG County.

Re: I got a scary email

Yep! I call them the king's men out collecting tax. Just what people were escaping when they left England for America, and why we wrote a constitution to assure proper rights for citizens. Just another shifty way to slip taxation upon us. If anyone thinks what comes out of their paychecks is the tax they pay they better start adding the fees up. Waht ever came of "To protect and serve"?

Re: I got a scary email

My wife and I drove our Malibu Vert thru Downtown Baltimore once and I have no plans to ever do that again . Scary Place even in Daytime . Had not planned it ,was a bad wreck on whatever Interstate we were on that shut it down and we were headed north to a show in Northeast Maryland and they detoured us there . When it was time to go home I went west 2 states and then south .

Re: I got a scary email

It's like the speed cameras and red light cameras 'for our safely'. They shorten the yellow on lights with red light cameras. You get people locking their brakes at yellow lights because they don't want a $75 fine. There are cameras in 'work zones' AKA any place with an orange cone. Speed limit is 65, go inside the beltway, so now it's 55, work zone, so it's 45. The speed limit dropped 20 mph and they ticket anyone doing 12 over. Their whole purpose is to collect money, it has nothing to do with accidents. I'd bet the red light cameras cause as many accidents as they stop from people slamming on their brakes.

Re: I got a scary email

Also, locals know where speed and or light cameras are. So they go slow by the camera and make up the time speeding everywhere else. The country boy, who not only is unaware of the location but even the actual use of such abominations that everywhere he goes is leading a parade of zippy impatient suburbanites with his slowed more reasonable attentive pace gets the ticket for going 32 in a 20. I can stop to avoid hitting anything at 32, especially the children walking to school I am totally watching out for. Just had a big buck jump out and stop dead square across my path and stared at me last night. I locked it up and had a good car length to spare. I was doing 40.
