Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Just wondering if anyone else here screws around with old garden tractors.

Post pics of what you got if you do.

Heres a couple of mine.

84 Allis Chalmers 920 Diesel

I'm the 3rd owner on this one, I got it with 496 hours on it. I had to travel 1500 miles round trip to pick it up.

The day I picked it up in Sellersburg IN

After a little cleanup

Next to my 65 Allis Big Ten

Tiller on

A little extra weight

Home built sleeve hitch

Mowing a little grass

Snow eater

How cool! To answer your question no I don't, but want to!
Have my eye on a buddies old Craftsman with a tiller attachment.
Not as cool as yours.

What year is it? Is it an old Sears or Craftsman?

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I wouldnt say a collector but I grew up on a 444 case and my ma blew it up. They still have it but I wasnt going to spend over $1000 on an engine for it since the deck is toast. I bought a 446 a few years ago with a deck, homeade cab and dual stacks on the Onan 2cyl. My father in law just gave me his old 444 with a tiller, deck and snowblower that I had no idea he had. I have to pick it up yet but I used the blower on my 446 all winter. I will have to get some pics. I love the 2 old Cases you have. A few years earlier than mine and are harder to find than hens teeth in this country.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Sweet, we used to have a 72 444 I loved that tractor, How blowed up is yours? I actually prefer the old Kohler singles over the Onan twins. The 65 AC Big Ten I got was repowered from an old Briggs to Kohler power by me and the old man.

The 2 Case we got are actually my old mans. I believe they are both 65s a 120 and a 190

Real blown up, I pulled it apart and the connecting rod had exploded into a million pieces. It needed a crank, rod, piston and rings. Since it was either get parts for a grand or a new motor for a grand I figured I could buy something else for that money. Also the mower deck needed all new spindle bearings, blades and the deck itself was beat up from too many stumps and tree branches that either myself, my sisters or my mom had run over. The tractor itself is in decent condition and it has the rear lift and a tiller. I was going to put all that stuff on my 446 since it doesnt have it but since I acquired a free running one I wont do it. I have thought about the idea of making a 4wd out of two of them. The 446 I bought for 1500 and the deck was in good shape as well as the tractor. He made an allis blower work on it and I didnt buy it with it at the time because I thought I spent too much already. He had a cab on it with lights and a wiper. He has cement wheel weights he made for it (which help alot) and put studded v-tread on the front to keep the front end from pushing. The only things I have done was replace the blades, one set of spindle bearings, mower belt, changed the oils and a battery. I have looked into a repower with a B&S but am not sure about it. I would love to have the diesel out of that allis to do a repower. I will get pics of my 446 today and when I get my 444 picked up I will supply pics of that.
Nice vids btw.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I've always had a soft spot for the oldies. That diesel is too cool. My attention is usually to the earliest ones, like your Big Ten. I love the Case tractors, just because of the colors. Almpst bought one when I got my 1st John Deere 110. I ended up with two. These were the first design with the tractor seat and round fenders...Kohler 8hp. I ended up selling them when I needed some money pretty bad. My place doesn't really call for a rider since I stopped mowing the meadow. I figure I'll get another or two or twenty one day.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

854x4, Thanks. For Decals check out Maplehunter, as far as parts go Check CL, ebay, And you might be surprised what your local dealer has. There is also some good forums for info also like Mytractorforum.com and Simpletractors.com

TCB, Is it a factory motor?? If it is its a little newer than 71 and is probably a 718. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Special-K, I have always loved the old ones too, the Diesel is actually the newest one I've owned. Those round fender 110 were what 65/66s?? I never have been a JD guy but we did have a round fender 110 about 10 years ago. We got it cheap and sold it for a good deal to a friend.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

My dad has a yard full of old mowers, I forget the details, but a 90's Craftsman, a couple of old early 70's yellow and white Cub Cadets, a red Cub Cadet, I think it is an 81 model, and a 60's Massey ferguson that has a single cylinder engine. We quit using it because it has a rod knock. I think it has a 12 hp 1 cylinder Briggs. He also has a Snapper he bought in 81, needs a new drive disc. I used it until recenlty but it didn't have electric start and I have a bad shoulder. This is in additon to the Cub lo boy, Farmall A, and around half a dozen 50's Famall Cubs. He also bught a little compact 4wd Kubota with hydrostatic driveand and a front loader a couple of years back. I have a late 80's Snapper with electric start I bought recently for $200 to replace the dad's Snapper I was using. We have always been really happy with Snappers for mowing only due to the fact that thereis no "transmission" to worry about. My yard is kind of uneven, so it does better than "tractors" since the front and rear wheels pivot separately.

My advice would be to go to your local lawn tractor dealer and ask if you could take a look at one of their setups on a new tractor.

YOu will need a switch installed on your clutch pedal that will open the starter circuit unless the pedal is engaged. It would go in line with the starter solenoid wire.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I've got a couple, mine is an old Westwood T1800, a UK brand but it has a proper US made engine, an 18hp Kohler twin, its now over at my house in France awaiting some work on the brakes as I found out when I backed it off the trailer and nearly dissapeared down a steep hill the brakes failed due to someone breaking off one of the caliper mounting screws and also someone very cleverly coating the whole brake assembly in grease! I've now sourced all the broken/missing p[arts and new pads and just need to wangle the broken off screw out of the gearbox casing and reassemble then it can start to amke my life a bit easier chewing through my 3 acres over there.

ended up with a cheap ebay cone filter as the original airfilter assembly was half missing and a new one was a stupid amount of money.

This is it with my twin sons playing on it in its new home in the ground floor of my French house. It has now got a new steering wheels as that one was held together with cable ties and tape as I pulled the rim off during my backwards plunge off the trailer!

I also have a slightly smaller Westwood T1200, has a 12hp B&S that I'm restoring for my parents, was given to me free, needs a lot of work though as its currently a non runner, needs all new ignition parts, some missing control levers from the transmission replacing and a good once over. The deck is the worst so I'm either going to find a better one or its going to be a bit of a weldathon to get rid of the holes! It looks pretty much the same as the bigger one, slightly different front end. One day when I have a decent sized garage I'm gonna drag the big one back from France and do a full resto on it.

You might see if you can get by with a safety switch on the clutch pedal. Run your wire from the start terminal on the ign.switch through the safety switch to the solenoid so you would have to depress the clutch to start it.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I bought and sold many JD garden tractors, mainly 110's - 400 series tractors. I had a lot of fun fixing up and selling them. Moved on to fix up my pickup, should have stuck with the tractors, a lot cheaper! I did keep a 3 cylinder diesel and a 3 cylinder gas job.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Old tractors are so cool. Although I now live in place where I can't fully utilize one (I have .75 acre), I wish I had one. I was born and raised in Kentucky, and have spent a lot of time mowing fields behind the wheel of many a small tractor.

I have been big into John Deere's but have been selling off a lot of stuff lately to fund my 50 chevy project. Still have these and a few others.

420 repowered with a 28hp Kohler EFI
112 I FULLY restored
332 I turbocharged and painted up.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Fronts on the 332 are 16x6.5x8 Firestones. Miller Tire sells them.

Other tractor has 18x8.5x8 V-61's Miller also.

332 has a 3TNA66 engine. 16hp.

The 430's had the 3TNA72, which was a 20hp version of this one.
