Spare tire carrier winch hoist

I searched and had seen a few threads with a few people mocking up newer truck spare tire winches. I did not see anyone with completed working hoist in their truck. I was wanting to do this on the 79 since the spare tire carrier is fairly rusty and just kind of ugly looking. Anyone complete this upgrade, well I would consider it a upgrade anyway.

Re: Spare tire carrier winch hoist

A buddy of mine actually rigged up a little donut tire hoist for his truck, it fits even though it is lowered 6 inches and has crazy exhaust.

Re: Spare tire carrier winch hoist

One problem I have heard about with the winch hoists is that they tend to rust out and get stuck. Also, I think you would have to address the crank handle which is accessed through a hole in the bumper. Of course, they are a lot easier to use than the stock set up. I had to change a few flats on my new vehicles with this type of crank mechanism and they do work well since you just have to get the support end of the winch roughly in place and the cable will get it lined up and seated correctly.

I was able to move the pivot bolt forward about one inch to get the stock spare tire carrier inside the trailer hitch, but the tire is quite close to the exhaust that goes out the side behind the rear tires. I just have the stock 23585R16 tires so the spare fits OK but a larger tire would not fit. I think a larger tire on the winch style mechanism might also be a problem just fitting between the frame rails.
