Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

I found an original, unrestored 1972 longhorn camper special Cheyenne with 42,000 miles on it.

The truck has 400 badges on it (not sure if that is small block or big block, i know they called the 396's 402's at some point but not sure what the badges mean). It has a heavy duty dana/spicer style rear axle and appears to be all there.

The truck is dinged and dented up, has original paint that isn't so great, but appears rust free and original. I almost choked when I saw the $9k dealer price tag. I got him down over $2k over the phone in about 30 seconds so I know there is some give, but is this truck all that desirable or rare for that matter?

If you haven't seen it in person go and look at it very carefully. An original 42k truck should not need paint, should have the original seat cover in decent shape, and the rubber brake pedal should not have much wear on it. Among other things.

I once bought a truck that had 47,000 on the odometer. It had the owners manual, protecto-plate, etc and the second owner said he thought it was original miles. The original seat had no rips in it but was a little worn. The pedals were worn considerably. It was a nice original truck and the price was right but it just wasn't nice enough for a 47k truck. I went ahead and bought it and while looking through the owners manual I found that the original owner kept a service log in the back, and the odometer had rolled over in 1988..... I wasn't disappointed because I suspected that was the case. Things aren't always as they seem and unless you are talking to the "original" owner who can verify the mileage don't put much stock in what someone "thinks", or says.

If it is dinged and dented up it isnt worth anywhere near 9K, or even 7K for that matter.

Re: Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

Yeah, I don't really know how popular the camper special/longhorn combo is. I have looked at it in person, the paint appears original. The truck is 41 years old and looks it, probably hasn't been pampered but isn't beat up either. Whether it has 42,000 miles is obviously the question, but regardless is there a market for these in anywhere near this price range?

Do people even go after these models? I am a big early truck fan, but my tastes go more towards long fleets, short fleets, etc. The longhorn has never been at the top of my list, though I know some people like them.

If you are asking because you want to flip it or get your money back out of it, then no. SWB trucks are the most popular and bring the most money. If you are not a big fan of Longhorns, then I would pass on this truck.

Re: Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

The truck seemed relatively heavy duty for an older truck and might be able to actually do a little work unlike my coil spring C10. Was considering picking it up but probably wouldn't hold onto it forever.

So I think my question has pretty much been answered.

Re: Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

They did not put small block 400's in the chevy truck until after the body change in 73. So the truck would be a big block. Jim

They are desirable to a number of people. Someone will want to buy it. Shortbeds sell for more, but they also cost more to buy. It's all about what you can get them for. If you'd like to use it some for a while, then then theres more reason to go for it

There is always a market for a good clean 67 -72 1/2 or 3/4 ton. The quality of the vehicle dictates price. One of the latest examples.http://www.ebay.com/itm/190934131887...887%26_rdc%3D1

Re: Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

That eBay truck illustrates my point; it has been on and off the local craigslist here for close to a year now. It's a VERY nice looking truck, but obviously not selling for what the seller thinks it is worth. I agree, it's all about what you can get them for.

I like long wheel bases.

If I could, I'd try and get that assuming I saw it in person first and it passed my detailed inspection.

Re: Whats it worth - C20 Cheyenne Longhorn Camper Special?

well, "I" love a longhorn custom camper
SO, if you decide to pass, post some pics/poc info for the truck! Would love to see it.

Concur with the above, it's all relative. If flippin, I'd probably pass unless it's a GREAT bargain. Yes, pass. Pass to me! Ha. You can get a lwb for less, and sell for less, so profit is still there to be made. But, having said that, Longhorns are a niche market, but its smaller ranks are fanatical about that extra 6". Anyway, it's all about condition, condition, condition. If nice, there will always be a market for it. I have a sneaky suspicion I've seen the truck to which you're referring. Custom Camper is a routine CL search for me... Personally, I think a Cheyenne Longhorn Big Block Custom Camper is a pretty sweet combo.
