Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

Usually when you like classic cars/trucks, you also like items that were a related to the era mainly referred to as: automobilia. So who has a vintage cooler or two that you carry with you to the local cruise or show?

Here's a few that I picked up from a recent thread posted by tcb-1 (Doug):

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

I picked up a really nice Coleman metal cooler at a garage sale last year for $3. I can't find anything wrong with it. You can still get them at Bass Pro but they are like $125.

Not metal but I've had it forever.
Friend of mine did the artwork.

During the '93 flood here in MO, I remember a perfect 7-up cooler in my grandparents basement. The flood didn't get it but just in case we took everything out. I've went back to try to find it a few times, but I guess one of my uncles trashed it. I'm sure he thought it was just old junk.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

Finally got some time to post a few pics of the coolers we scored last weekend on a trip to St Louis. The first one pictured is an unembossed '40s/'50s cooler made by Progress Refrigerator Co in Louisville, KY. It included the sandwich tray, cooler, lid and drain plug; the best thing about it is that it still holds water. We did clean it up a little bit as it had a some stains on top that took away from the cooler so with the help of a little Mr. Clean Magic Eraser off came the stains and out popped the original red color.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

Up next we have the 2nd cooler we score last weekend, and we ended up getting this one thrown in. It's an all aluminum cooler with 7Up logos on the front/rear. The only issue with the cooler was that during its life it was sat on so the top is pushed in a little, but it still holds ice and doesn't leak. We used it last night at the cruise-in. It was made by Cronstroms Mfg. Inc in Minneapolis, MN.

I'm thinking that trailer was made from the same cooler as mine. I picked that cooler up for $30 about 25 years ago and have hung on to it since. It worked when I bought it, but the compressor has since gone. It don't look like it would be real difficult to build one of those trailers.

Nate, what would my Dr Pepper cooler look like in your truck? The color looks pretty close.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

Well Bill.... to me I think it would look right at home!

That was quite the deal on the larger cooler as they fetch quite the price now. I'd like to end up with one for my garage, but I've got plenty of time to keep looking.

Asa, I'm glad to see that the cooler went to a good owner. I would have loved to of seen it make its way to Mid-MO. Any pinstriping in it's future?

Thanks Nate. I thought about the pinstriping. I'm real close to painting my 63, then I'm gonna get the sign painter to do the door art, maybe have him look at it then.

btw; good luck on the Truck-of-the-Month contest. You got my vote. Without a doubt, the nicest interior I've ever seen. And all original, WOW.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

Thanks for the kind words about my '69 Bill, I still pinch myself when I walk into the garage each day.

The Dr. Pepper cooler above, would you consider that close to the Light Green offered by GM? Looks like I might need to start looking for another one...

I'm thinking the cooler is a lighter shade. Mine must be faded because 69lemans's cooler that you posted is brighter and darker than mine, but I still think it's lighter than your truck.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

I've been thinking about repainting the red one I got to match the truck (w/ white pinstriping), or white (w/ light green pinstriping). Then again, I would hate to change such a clean original cooler. I think you're right though your cooler is more of a mint green.

Re: Who's got them...? Vintage Metal Coolers

I've already sent a message to the guy that striped my camera to see what his schedule is looking like! I've got to see when he and I are going to be in the same place at the same time so I can avoid shipping it.

I drug this one home a while back...

Fits right in there doesn't it?

This is another one that is at my grandparents. The outside might not look like much but the stainless on the inside looks perfect. We fill it up with drinks and ice whenever he has his get togethers out there.
