Trim rear bump stops?

Hey, I have a 70 cst with a 4.5/6 drop. There is no c-notch but I did put shock relocaters and GR-2's on. I notice it does not have alot of travel till it hits the bumpstops on the rear. Should I cut an inch off them? Just wondering what you guys did. Thanks Tim

Sorry I should probably clarify I have about an inch before they hit now so what would be the ideal amount? Thank You

Thats a good question , how much travel should one expect from a decent suspension and how much bump stop is enough to prevent metal on metal contact. since we dont really haul a bunch what is ideal??

TubbedII: i would recomend at least some bump stops just to prevent metal contact which could result in cracks eventually resulting in catastrophic failure ( and we dont want that)!

I'm really suprised no one has come to clarify this. Considering I did a search on it and the was'nt any info on what to do with rear bump stops. I think this would be good info for those of us without c-notches.

I trimmed mine. I now have about 1/2" pads. Didn't net much more travel but when it did bottom out it didn't sound like I was breaking parts.

I didn't have any bump stops in at all with my 4/6. I bottomed out on the frame twice on big bumps though...

I usually just remove them totally.
You could start by trimming 1" off and seeing how you like it.

I agree. The factory stop is too tall. Remove it and mount a small button style stop above the axle.

I just did my flip a few days ago....... it is about 6 or 7in...... I did the 2in drop shakle first but after the drop the shakles don't lean back like it did...... so I'm guessing I have a 6... rear end is setting right on the bump stop, have not bought any drop shocks yet...... on 2.5 spindles in front.... don't look to bad

There probably haven't been to many answers because it's rather subjective.
"It depends" upon what you feel is acceptable...
What are the roads like in your area?
LWB or short?
Ever carry anything?
How hard are you willing to let it "feel"?
Etc....

I wouldn't remove them totally though. Maybe cut them in half and test it?
Add a small notch?... it's not that hard to do.

Long wheel base
I load it once every blue moon
Id like it all to be gone but I know that is not going to happen, thinking of going with air shocks..

I removed mine completely, and I have hit the bed rails on the axle tube on a large dip/bump in the road.

I'm still debating a notch, just don't know if I wanna cut into the truck.....

I had to do some cutting if I removed it completly.... that part right there has to be trimmed

That will definitely ride bad. The only "suspension" you would have there is the sidewall of the tires themselves.......not much.

You really should do something about cutting that stop and probably notching the frame too. It's not just sitting on the stop, it's smashing into it.

I trimed bump stop and put old shackles on....... rides better , going to get shocks some time another...

I have bags, no notch and I trimmed my bumpstops to about a 1/4" below the frame rail. I have never had any issues hitting the stops/frame yet, but it could be because I run the bags at 25-28 psi for my ride height. Id have to measure the clearence to my axle but I would guess its about 2" +/- at ride height.

I'm having a similar issue with my 63 lwb c20 with unkown drop springs, and 2 inch blocks. I have 1" of clearance before the stop hits the axle... I guess I'll just cut them down for now. What's the best way to cut thick rubber?

I honestly cant remember how I cut mine, probably a sawzall or cut off wheel(?)

A band saw works perfect. Then finish with a belt sander.

I cut mine just so they would hit the stop before the metal to metal hit. That in my mind is where you want it. You want as much travel out of it as possible without hitting under normal driving.
Take your wheels off and look into the wheel well at the bump stops and mark then just 1/8" lower than the frame. This want keep it from hitting metal to metal but it will soften the impact when it does.
