Estimate of late fees
Hello, I'm looking at buying a 1972 c20, but the registration has been overdue since December of 2015. Could anyone give me an estimate of what I should expect to owe when I go to the DMV??? I am in California.

Re: Estimate of late fees
California is the only state I know of that makes you pay fees for a vehicle that isn't current on registration.
All other states you only pay for 12 months at a time.

Re: Estimate of late fees
All you have to do is put it on "non op" and the registration is suspended with no fees. Unfortunately people are too lazy and/or too stupid to do it, fees accrue, and cars are junked.

Re: Estimate of late fees
Yep -- I am giving a motorcycle to one of my sons who lives in another state. Don't know when he'll take delivery so for now the bike has a non-op on it, no penalties.

Re: Estimate of late fees
I don't think you would be paying more than about $300.00....that is what I payed for back fees plus penalty for a 70 gmc motorhome I bought not long ago...

Re: Estimate of late fees
To get Dec of 17 tags you are looking at around $400. Look at the weight of the truck on the title slip and if it is slightly over 5000 lbs put the truck on a diet to get it down to 4980 and take it to a certified scale. That will save you money every year on the weight fees.

Re: Estimate of late fees
Thanks for all of the responses, so I shouldn't expect to pay too much in fees?

In Iowa, if a vehicle hasn't been registered for 3 years or more you don't have to pay any back fees or penalty. You only owe for the current year.... Nice.. LockDoc

Re: Estimate of late fees
I took my C10 to one of those stores that will do registration stuff for you. They were able to bring the fees down when I got my plates for the truck.

Re: Estimate of late fees
I put "collector" plates on my truck here in WI. With this plate, you can't drive it during the month of January, (wouldn't anyway) but never have to pay for tabs again!
