I actually love the story behind the '57...
I have a similar story, I ended up getting a '71 Super Beetle that I had to get a carb off fleaBay for $50 to get it running... traded that for my '90 Silverado DD which in the end cost me $50...
Don's story is great! Got to hear it when we got together last month. It is always fun to hear when it actually works for someone. Doesn't seem to happen too often but sure is good when it does.

Bottom line, I spent $130 for 57 and boy did I get lucky!
