Re: 4x4 with air bags?

Up DATE TIME!!!

Ok guys, FINALLY got to drive the beast . and man she runs GOOD! Only running 5psi right now, and a VERY conservative tune till I have time to dial it in. I need to do some more work on the front steering though, has some really bad bump steer, so I think I'm gona have to put cross over steering on it. It's riding pretty rough too, but I think the box will help that, if not, I'm gona put some 1500# sleeve type bags in the back, and they should ride better. I got my seats put in too.

Oh, and these's a video in here for all you video freaks too,

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

That is just too cool! How much is involved in the turbo set up? I am thinking about this for my 70 2WD Blazer. It would be on an LS motor.

Turbos are pretty simple, once you understand them. I've been messing with them on my other truck for about 3 years now. Started out with a STS remote mount on it and just kept play with them. It got the same thing as this does pretty much now, only I run 10psi on the 4.8. This thing spools super fast, lol. Serious traction issues

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

I fully under stand them I just have never built a system (yet). I am thinking about a twin set up with two smaller turbo's for a balanced look and it will be very low. I feel it would be easier with two seperate systems then trying to cross over to one and then I would need one larger exhaust pipe instead ot just two reasonable sized ones. It will be a show vehical for the first year then a tire eater after that. I am planning on a 2001-2005 vett LS1 for the power plant. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kevin

If your building a show truck and going for the bling factor, then twins and an LS1 are a good thing. But if you don't have unlimited money, you can make more power, with less money with a iron 6l and a single. Heck, you can even stroke it and have a 408. With twins, you have to buy and build 2 of everything. With a setup like mine, I only had to build 1 manifold (used the stock manifold on the drivers side, they flow VERY well and being thick cast, they will stand up very well too), 1 cross over pipe, 1 turbo, 1 waste gate and 1 down pipe. Quicker, easier and cheaper to build and can make as much or more power.

Twins are always impressive to look at, but don't kid your self if you think they will be easier. There is MUCH more pluming involved

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

What all did you or will you need to do for computer tuning? I am not aposed to a iron 6L but like I said this will be a show vehical to start with so I want it to look clean and balanced but I should be able to do that with a single and some sheet metal work. What is a ball park amount for parts that you have in your set up if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for the insite!

I use EFILive FlashScan V2 for tuning, www.efilive.com. I can hook you up if you need it . I have been tuning my other truck with it for over 2 1/2 years now.

$$$ in this truck, I don't want to think about it, lol. Are you talking about just the turbo setup or the hole truck? The cost of the turbo setup can very greatly depending on what parts you use. If you go brand name or knock off. Most of the parts I used I built or are quality knock offs that I inspected thoroughly before I installed them.

If you want to discuss this or turbo's in general, feel free to keep asking questions here, or hit me up on AIM or MSN at this same SN.

Yes I was just talking about the turbo set up and just the parts that you did not make. I can build alot of it my self so it will just be the main items I was wondering about a ball park $ on. Thanks for your time.

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

I got the cross over steering done, but still not real happy with it, Pretty slow steering and doesn't "feel" tight, but most of the bump steer is gone. The truck drive nice, and tracks very well, just don't like the "feel". But that's a problem to fix another day. I'm calling this done for now. Dad can drive it and be happy for a while. He said he's going to try and do the body work so, we'll see, . The truck runs VERY strong for only 5 psi, he should be happy. I'll get some pics with the box back on and of how the interior turned out.

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

Man you have build your Dad the ultimate sleeper. I can't wait to start playing with a turbo'd set up in one of my two curent builds. Hey is the 5.3 a "6bolt" main or is that just the 6.0? I am thinking about going with the 5.3 for better gas milage. My last 6.0 was great but it only got 14 no matter what you were doing with it.

Thanks!

All the Gen III motors (4.8,5.3,5.7,6.0,) are 6 bolt mains and all the parts pretty much are interchangeable, just like the old small blocks

Re: 4x4 with air bags?

Well, my dad FINALLY got back to WY about 2 weeks ago from galavanting around the country in the Dmax and 5th wheel doing the retired thing with mom and drove her for the first time. He was a little reserve with it at first, cuz I wasn't there to talk to him about all the stuff I had done and what was what, so he was just piddling around in it. He absolutely LOVES IT!!!

He said after he drove it for a week, he decided to get on it for the first time so he nailed it from a stop and about half way though the intersection, it hit full boost and he said it broke both rear tires loose and got a little sideways on him . Surprised him at first, but for only 5 psi of boost, he's in love, May be this summer we will bump it up a little, but he is VERY happy with his baby, and a little proud of his son
