Rear Shock Recomendation

I'm moving my rear shock upper mounts in and will be replacing the shocks to increase travel. I need a minimum extended length of 19.75" and a max compressed length of 13.5" but would prefer more like 20" ext and 13" comp. Any suggestions? I have an email in to KYB but I figured you guys might have some good recommendations.

Re: Rear Shock Recomendation

If you go on monroes website you can look through their shock dimension guide and it will tell you if a shock like that exists, and then you can reverse look up the app from the part # andfind out what it's for and order shocks from whatever manufacturer you wish for that vehicle.

That sounds close to the dimensions of the rear shocks I swapped to on my 68 Beater. I used some Bilsteins for a 88~98 Chevy w/a 4/6 drop (that was their catalog ID). The install required a custom (homemade) upper bracket & 3" more travel vs. a stock 67~72 GM rear truck shock.

Tomorrow I'll try & find the dimensions I documented out in the garage to confirm the exact measurements.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Rear Shock Recomendation

I used the mounting chart then the dimension chart to find the shocks I needed. The ones I got for my truck are the Monroe Sensatrac PN 5850. It has an L2 top mount and LS47 lower which matches the factory mounts, a compressed length of 12" and extended length of 19". It was the closest thing I could find and is actually listed for a Corvette in the application guide. Hope this helps.

I started my search using the same logic.

What concerned me was that I find it hard to believe all shocks are valved the same (from the same product line/manufacturer). Does any shock that fits have the right valving for my swb truck application? I decided that I would look for truck applications that were real close to my needs.... a 88~98 4/6 dropped Chevy seemed real close. I did have to refigure my shock bracket travel on the truck but it was worth it to me to have the same type shock F/R.

Just a thought.....

No, but as you indicate... once you find a part number that "fits" you have to dig into the original application to see if weight, etc., are "appropriate."

The numbers I posted above are both for 1/2 and 3/4 ton truck applications... the one I chose is actually for a Frod pickup

I'd been looking at the 5850 shocks as well but came up with 9.5" comp and 14" ext.4.4" of travel. L1 and ls14 mounts corvette
Also a 555003 with 9.6" comp and 14.75 ext 5.1" travel RV shock

I just installed a pair of the second model on the Wallet Eater.
Just wanted to close the loop on this and say thanks again for the input.

I ended up going with a Monroe Sensa-Trac 37037

No more shock limited travel. I have almost 10" of rear travel now That's more than enough for my purposes.

That's a 16" ruler:

Now I need to do something about that exhaust...

Re: Rear Shock Recomendation

Although your application is a little different from mine, I'm curious, if you can remember back to when your KYB's were still working, how they compare with the Monroes for ride. I've always had KYB's in my cars, but was considering the Sensatracs for my stock truck, thinking they'd provide a slightly more comfortable, if less performance minded, ride.

I'm not going to be able to make a direct comparison yet because I also removed the rear sway bar when I switched to the monroes. I can let you know after I put the hellwig on there. But FWIW I thought the KYBs felt great in the stock config.

Re: Rear Shock Recomendation

I installed a set of Sensatracs on my stock truck today. They are firmer than I expected based on the marketing description, but not so firm as to be uncomfortable. I like them and am glad I didn't go with something firmer. They go a long way toward helping "Annie" (Shy Anne) ride more like a car.
