I posted on the other board about how I have broke the housing on two turbo 400 transmissions. I have been calling around tryin to figure out how it happened, and I was told that its possable that when reving the engine a lot that the back of the motor is picking up too much and ripping off the housing on the transmission. I was told in some 4x4 trucks there is some kind of support or mount that hooks to the back of the motor. Anyone know what this is, where i can get it and if it will work with out a 4x4?

my truck is a 70 chevy 2 wheel drive with a 454 and th400 transmission

BUT I'VE BEEN HOTRODDING THESE OLD TRUCKS FOR A LONG TIME (18 YEARS) & HAVE BUILT SEVERAL TRUCKS, THAT HAVE HAD BIG BLOCKS WITH WELL OVER 500 REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER, & HAVE NEVER BROKEN A BELLHOUSING (OR CASE) ON A T-400. Look at your drivers side motor mount. They like to fall apart and cause exsesive movement. The trans mount is probably hding the tranny better then teh engine mounts are.

i second the aligment problem unless you have a broke trans/motor mount

This may sound dumb, but make sure your engine does not have a pilot busching in the end of the crank for a standard tranny.I have seen this happen,but you should notice it when you bolt them together as you will be fighting it to get them together. Good luck.

im not to sure on the Hp its puting out but I know its a lot. the trans and motor mounts are both brand new. ill look into the alignment thing next. This is the second time this has happend in 3 months both times the truck was in park and bein reved up to high rpms. mabye somone can help me out with how much hps I may be putting out that has desktop dyno

power levels shouldn't matter if the power isn't going anywhere...something is terribly wrong.
Are the dowl pins still on it? If it is not lined up perfect, it will destoyt eh tranny...but never seen one crack from it though.

What grade of bell housing bolts are you using? You should use grade 5 or better. I had to buy a new trans case for a customer once because I used cheap bolts. Just a thought. Good luck.

I have grade 8 bolts. I have been calling around and a few people have told me to take out the left mount and bolt that side down solid. here is a pic i took today of the tranny I broke.

Are the dowl pins still on it? If it is not lined up perfect, it will destoyt eh tranny...but never seen one crack from it though.
