Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
If you eat them and die they are no good. For $2.99 lb I'll pick mine at Safeway.

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
What I have heard from mushroom hunters is if you don't know what you are doing, or with someone with LOTS of experience when it comes to mushrooms, just don't even think of consuming them. There are too many that will make you REALLY SICK best case to DEAD worst case. Not for messing with.

If one survives, the wrong mushrooms can really screw up the kidneys.

Pick them, and if the stem turns blue, they're no good. Send them to me for proper disposal.

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
The only mushroom I ever picked at ate from the wild is the morel. Very easy to identify and very tasty sauted in butter.
It's the only one I would ever pick and eat that wasn't from the store. |

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
Do you know the proper name for them or where they grow naturally? I love a well cooked mushroom! Ever had a portabello that was cooked just right? It tastes almost like a steak!

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
The ones up there are morels. The are ususally found on the south hillside when the nights start staying warm and there is enough moisture. The morning after a good shower is good if it is warm. The can be found around black oaks, elms, and another I can't think of right now. Ya soak them in salt water over night after you have sliced them. I roll them in egg and flour then fry in butter. Yum. Just seeing these makes me get the fever.
70blowngmc I would not eat those. Here we call them toad stools. I have never heard of anyone eating those. Last edited by Mudder; 03-31-2009 at 07:33 AM. |

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
The morels around here tend to be found in areas that have had fires in previous years. We used to pick them in an area that had birch trees along with a few oaks and some firs.
My mom gets them growing around their burn pile for tree trimmings and burnable ag waste. |

Re: mushroom hunters /gatherers
My parents were very hippie like, independent living when I was younger. They attended alot of in the wild survival type classes as well as mushroom and plant gathering. They didn't dedicate enough time to mushrooms, there are so many that look alike, so the only ones we picked were morels. Like Tim pointed out his parents friend was an expert and still almost died.
The one cool thing my folks showed us was about licorice fern, and it taste like licorice. |
