Red face pics of floor board... need advice

alright this is all the rust i have found so far... passengerside floor board. i took all these pics in different light so you guys could see it better. and the last couple is so you could see what i'm working on.

now i need to know whats the best steps to take care of this... my plan is to cut out the rusted through areas and weld in a patch but 1) i dont know exactly how much of this area i should cut out?? 2) whats the best way to clean this up, knotted wire wheel or sand blast it? 3) once its welded up should i por15 the entire area and also the underside? and 4) will the rust continue to eat the metal if i dont cut it all out? thanks guys! i have more questions but this enough for now. Dennis

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

Dennis, do you have a small "spot blaster"? This might be a great occasion for one. Blast the rust, then see what the floor looks like. Those may still be the only holes, but there may be more that you don't notice yet. Cut out the immediate area around the rust holes and weld in your patch. Sometimes it is easier to do a clean job by cutting the area out and patching it along a prior lip or seam. Then prime, seal, & paint.

Not too bad at all. Seems like the heater core was leaking. You could probably patch it up but, there looks to be a coupla questionable areas (seam at the kick panel, toe panel area over by the tunnel and further back towards the seat) might be best to get a floor repair panel and replace the whole section. Good pics, BTW.

Gerald thanks man... whats a spot blaster? i need to figure out how to get this thing on wheels so i can roll it out to the drive way and blast it to get a better idea of how bad it is... and what do i seal it with?

1) Here is what I was talking about for the spot blasting. They have worked great for me in times when just a small area needs to be done.
http://www.eastwood.com/speed-blast-...d-blaster.html

2) As far as getting the cab mobile, you could build a 2x4 frame with casters, then you could wheel it where you need.

3) You can prime with an Epoxy Primer to seal everything up good.

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

a floorboard like that i'd take an icepick or awl and just start probing it with medium to heavy pressure to see what's solid and what's real thin

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

WOW!! that had to be up there in the top 5 worst and dumbest things ive ever done to myself!!

no neighbors were around so i decided to leave the cab in the garage. i taped off plastic around the windshield and door and plugged all the holes. then layed down a big quilt over the driverside door and taped myself in the cab with a 5 gallon bucket of sand and 150psi of compressed air!

i think the compressor kicked on twice and i started thinking boy these glasses sure are getting pitted and it sure is dark in here... after the compressor shut down the 2nd time i was starting to sweat and couldnt really catch my breath so i had to get out of there! i ripped through the plastic and the dust was amazing... i couldnt see anything! crazy... didnt even think or realize what i was doing... i made a big sandblast box

anyways, im okay besides the black and burgundy buggers and rusty taste in my mouth. the worst part is i didnt even finish! did find some more pin holes and thin areas. i'm going to order a panel from captkaos and see how big it is and how far i should cut.

what do you guys think of using a small angle grinder w/ like 30-40 grit pad to finish cleaning the rusty area??

i'll post up pics in a bit. D

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

Since you're still alive, I'll ask..................did you get a video?

Plastic abrasives work well for cleaning up the paint and rust, and BTW, wait 'til you get the new panel before cutting.
Also, get yourself at least a dust mask for when you're sanding, etc.

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

nope, no vid... but i got a few pics of how it turned out...

i just ordered a floor patch panel from Chris!

when i get it its just a matter of figuring out how big to cut it and weld it in right? i was wondering about that brace down there? if the new one will have it or if i'll have to drill out the spot welds and lift the rusted piece out?

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

Wow
that is pretty scary!!
Glad you survived!

You will need to drill out the spot welds on your old pan, then grind the brace smooth
you will also need to put some holes in the new pan to weld it back to the brace

Cab support is a seperate piece, just drill the spot welds like you figured.

( too slow for Joe......)

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

something you may try is take a block of alumnium and have someone hold it from the underside, then weld across the holes. the alumnium will not melt to the floor and if you work it right you can fill the holes and grind them smooth. this saves alot of time and work, if the holes are not to big. just a suggestion best of luck with it and BTW that chassis looks sweet

if i did this how do i stop the rust from eating the rest of the floor? i was under the assumption that rust was like cancer. (cut it out) unless its just surface rust... i just want to do it right so i dont ever have to worry that its still there eating away. thoughts??

Based on what you're starting with and the job that you are doing (chassis pic), is the reason that I suggested replacing the floor panel to begin with. JMO.

Good deal Dennis. I always look for ways to save a buck when it is my vehicle. But, I am glad to see you got a plan figured out. I am sure it will turn out well. And, I bet you wont build yourself into a sand blast box again, huh?

Re: pics of floor board... need advice

I'm not saying how you should do it......but if you were able to weld up the holes (if the metal isn't too thin) and blast the floors you could coat the floors with POR or Zero-Rust to keep it from rusting again.

replacing the pans seem to be more on par with the level of work you are doing though

Thanks Joe... I hope it is the right choice. I am done with blasting for awhile and the metal seems really thin in spots.

When in doubt cut it out!
