Folding 2nd seat

Found these pics in my computer. A guy sent them to me almost ten years ago. As I recall, the seat was from a '73 or '74 suburban that had little padding in the back, which allowed it to actually lay flat. I tried it with a seat from a mid-80's burb, but the extra padding in the seat back did not allow it to lay flat, making it bad for hauling drywall, etc. I wish I could remember the guy's name who sent these. Thought maybe someone could use them for ideas.

Re: Folding 2nd seat

perhaps you could have an upholstery shop shave some foam off the seat backs from a donor truck and then modify the upholstery to fit. the bottom looks the same as on my dad's 84 and 87 burbs. i want to do this mod on my 72 burb and keep the factory upholstery intact. only big issue would be mounting the side brackets that support the seat back since there is an open cavity. perhaps you could rig up a plate that hangs behind the side panel and the bracket would bolt through the panel into the plate and look factory installed!

Re: Folding 2nd seat

I have a second row from an 83 Sub with all hardware I'll give to someone if they want to try this.

They will have to pick it up. I'm sure shipping would be outrageous.

PM me if interested.

Re: Folding 2nd seat

I unfortunately threw out the seat backs long ago. You are right in saying an upholstery shop could have made it work one way or the other. I ended up losing patience and installed the regular 2nd seat, which was of course a pain when I had to haul big items. I saved everything else though and will take another crack at it sometime. Before I junked the donor burb I took a sawzall to it and cut out the mounting plates for the side panel brackets with the welded nuts on the back. As was mentioned, the way to go is to do some creative fabricating and welding to mount the brackets in steel (instead of wood) behind the side panels.
