The Red Dale Conversion

I have been waiting to post this for a long time. A few months back I drove 65 miles through a whiteout to check this baby out and make aragements to pay the guy. His son is a friend of mine and I had been eyeing this thing for awile. Got there and long story short in the end I got there 5 minutes late and the guy he bought it from , who was a friend of his was there giving him money to buy it back. Well now I guess he backed out so I get it afterall It is a 67 C30 camper conversion. 27,000 original miles on a 327 4 speed, fired right up after sitting all winter. Everything inside works. Needs some angle iron put of the bottom of the front part help suport it as there is a lil rot there but other than that, very pristine. I am super stoked and selling my Fairlaine and whats left of my 83 so I can pay for her, $1600 and I take it home, should be picking it up in a couple of weeks! Oh ya it even has CST badging! No cab a/c tho But I have no room to complain. Besides it has a 2 y.o unit in the back.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Thanks guys and as for the color I figure it would be stock. Of all the pictures I took somehow I forgot to take one of the SPID, . Will have to wait a couple weeks for that one. And yes it has a nice tow hitch set up complete with trailer brakes and all. Half the motivaton to get a camper was so I can take my daughter camping. She turned 2, 2 weeks ago and is just gettting to where she might enjoy it. My fairlaine should be sold already someone comming today to pay for half and the rest tomorow. If my 83 sells this week, I may even be able to go pick this thing up next weekend!

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Having alot of trouble finding info on C-30 motorhomes let alone this brand in general. Only thing I found was a wheelbase chart that listed a category of C-30 motorhomes, even had production numbers in only the motorhome section. This was for all of 67-72 chev and gmc.
127"-1,093 made
158.5"-7,194 made
178" 115 made

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

I've looked for years for a nice camper to pull my race car to the track for weekend meets. Now both cars are mothballed and my 24' enclosed is half full of junk. But I still would love to find one of those someday. Congrats on a great score.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

How much can you tow with one of these? Anyone have a clue what they weigh? He said it goes about 55 and thats it he said it sounds like its working pretty good at that speed. Wich brings me to my next question, what is the redline of a 327?

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Thats why I had to have it to. I prefer GMCs almost always, but there is something about the 67-68 chevs I have always really liked. Didnt care for the rest. So I was wanting to jump on one of them if I came accross it anyway, and it just happens to be a rocking motorhome to boot! Definitly worth selling off some of my other projects for.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

The rot there by the drivers side is a big problem! You will have to pull the windows and recaulk them with butyl caulk and possible the upper trim on the roof to seal it. I had a slide in like that and a simple window leak up front cause the plywood to de-laminate all along the bottom of the camper. Cover it quick then when it warms up reseal it.

Looks like a great deal to me. I would really like to have one of them.

If you want information on the camper part, you might try an RV site. They may have a link to some place you can get more information on it.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

I've got a 71 GMC Belair, which is a similar setup. It tips the scale at just over 8,000 lbs. I'm guessing you will have 4.56 gears. I've got 4.10's and it cruises down the highway well. If it's taching up at 55 an overdrive unit might be a nice upgrade in the future. Great looking rig! Sharpie

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Ya that little bit of rot could become a nightmare if not dealt with. As soon as I get it back to my house I plan on going over and reacaulking every and I mean every seam. As for the current rot he said it just showed up this winter so hopefully it is not too far along. It is a little on pas side to. My plans were to take three or so sticks of angle iron and run them along the bottom of the top bunk above the cab and use some flat iron welded to each end of the angle iron running up the sides of the bunck a foot or so and bolt them on and seal it up. That seems to me the best way to get the strength back in that bunk and would not look horibly gaudy.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Went and got it today! It drove really very well for a truck its size and age. At 55 the tach showed 2200rpm. I didnt see the need to go any faster anyway. Runs and shifts well, steering is tight. Its a little noisy, it just has glass packs that cut off under the cab. Some time some flowmasters may be in order. Drove 70 some miles on about 7 gallons of gas. Its got some eltical issues to sort out. There is no tail lights and I have brake lights only when the lights are off. Turn the headlights on, no brake lights. There is a swith on the dash that has to be on to start it and it seems to be involved in the brake lights too. It also has a electric fuel pump to feed the mechanical pump on the motor, will run without it but bogs down on a hill or while accelerating. But with it on it pulls hills like they arn't there. Hopefully I can tinker with it and get it all lined out so I can take it out in a few weeks.

Re: The Red Dale Conversion

Here is some more pics, found the only interior water damage and it looks to be minimal as long as I get it sealed up good, the angle Iron suports I mentioned installing are unecisary. Also has a neat old school fire bottle. And the spid for 68 stepside, maybe you can tell the paint from this.
