Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

It is on a 83, but has anyone tried to put a 73-87 model on a 60-66? can it be made to work? It came in today so I figured I would take it off and play around with it. Heck if nothing else maybe the center logo piece is the same as the 66

Has anyone seen one of these on a 73-87?

That looks like a pretty puny grill guard...Are you sure you want to put it on your truck?

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

The only place I've ever seen one of these is on the internet, so no idea how difficult it would be to modify. Some state they are made of solid bar stock while others claim they are tubing. I would imagine the bars/tubes could be heated with a torch and bent to fit, but it would probably ruin the plating, and might be somewhat difficult depending on the construction.

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

seems like it might be a close fit, especially since 63- 87 pretty much all have the same frame width

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

Not a fan of those things at all. I think the 60-66s look beautiful just the way they are, without bumper guards or grille guards.

Now, if I had a ranch truck that never left the property, and I put it through areas where the grille could become damaged, I'd have one. For a street truck that'll never see abuse, no thanks.

Looks like every inch of that truck in the picture is mashed or smashed, but that tube grill is perfect. Those grill guards must really work!

I see that was made by the Perry Co. They made alot of agricultural equipment from bush hogs to bale handling equipment, didn't know they made auto accessories.

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

Mine is made by Smah hit and it is most definitely sold steel. The weight of it is a dead give away. I would think the 67-72 would be a closer fit then the 73 up models as the frames are much closer in comparison. Ill post some pics tomorrow. This pic is the donar truck it came off of. Too bad the tow hooks were 73-80 models or I would have grabbed them also.

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

Just a note for those that might have interest - for a minute I thought perhaps the Perry Company that made the Smash Hit guards might be the same outfit making the Perrycraft bed rails on my truck. But it turns out the Perry Company has been in Waco, TX since 1946, while Perrycraft is located in Winston Salem, NC.

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

Anything can be made to fit... but why would you want to? I think most of that grill is plastic, isn't it?

There are custom grills you can buy for our trucks.

Some folks do variations and flip/cut the stock ones on our trucks and repaint them.

do what ya want tho'.

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

I dont know that the round guard would look good on that front end. The 67-72 grill guard is more square and would look better in my opinion. Here are pics of the three for comparison

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

I realize they are rare and unique, but to me they all look like someone took an old wrought iron bed frame and strapped it to the front bumper. Not sure how much "protection" you'd get from chrome plated conduit pipe.

Just my 2 cents- and to each their own.

OOPS, sorry then, I did not realize the real ones were solid. Apparently what I had seen in the past was a cheap knock-off- didn't mean any disrespect...

Re: Smash Hit Grille Guard in junk yard

The original GM grille guard is pointed to follow the shape of the grille support. Would the 73-88 not have a straighter section across the front of the hood?

LMAO!! Okay, I gotta say it.. That is by far the ugliest and weakest attempt at a grill guard I have ever seen..
I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just another @$$ with an opinion.. lol
