Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Hope my K20 looks that nice in the end. BTW- I finally got my windshield trim installed in my K10. With OEM trim it was a breeze. Added to the saga here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=484773&page=2

Great to see that beautiful big truck working as God and GM intended! Bravo, Sir! Now, you need the obligatory Camaro on the trailer behind the truck shot!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks Low Elco & Dieselwrencher. Worked on the oak side racks today. They should work great and allow me to stack a lot more brush & branches in the back.

Don't want to see any rust in the future so I used 5/16 stainless carriage bolts to secure the oak boards. Still need to make the section behind the cab. Might work on it tomorrow after the Ravens play!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thank you for your compliments, thelonerife and litew8. Grew up on a farm but now live in a development with only a 1/4 acre. The truck helps brings back memories of the farm.

Worked on finishing the oak rack behind the cab today. Still have to add some more stainless carriage bolts. Happy with how the racks are turning out. My wife says the racks makes my truck look more red neck! Don't think she meant that as a compliment. She did not grow up on a farm!

Put teak oil on the boards and it made the wood grain look much nicer. Will see how the finish holds up.

They are actually cross-referenced now in the MVA database with my other plates. The only down side is that every 2 years I have to pay to register both sets of plates. Oh well, worth it to me.

Great truck!!!

Are you running historic tags or regular tags?I was wanting to do this on my truck but I still want to be able to tow my car trailer with it.I know you can run them with historic & street rod plates but not sure about any others.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Steve, You can run the vintage plates in MD with regular or historic. My K20 has regular tags. I use the truck for doing work with with my property management business so it had to pass the MD inspection.

Also have a 69 Camaro that I tagged as historic and then got a set of 1969 MD vintage tags for it. You can use either. Just have to pay double for registering multiple sets of tags.

Every time I look at an overall shot of that truck, I hear Tim Allen. R-R-R! Manly Truck! Needs a gun rack, you know, to complete the look.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Good idea Low Elco. A gun rack would make it more red neck and period correct. Too bad there is not much room in the truck for a gun rack. The top of the seat rests against the back window. Pretty sure my head, or any passenger's head, would hit a gun rack.

Appreciate your f'in compliment, Sicklajoie. LOL!

Great work on the side rails/stock rack! The front piece with the window in it turned out awesome!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks Ryan. I ended up using a white metal closet shelf for the window area of that front piece. First was going to use some galvanized 1/4" square rat wire but it did not look heavy duty. The closet-maid wire shelf had much thicker metal and is much stronger.

Realize it is not "period correct" for an early 70's truck but it is functional It is hard to tell it has part of a metal closet shelf in it. Hauled a lot of branches and brush today and it worked perfect.

Love how the truck gets thumbs up from others on the road. They probably wonder why I haul stuff in it!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

That's awesome! I'm thinking of mounting my plow on my 72 now. It almost runs, and is shorter than my crew cab long bed. We'll see how bad I want to drive it in the snow and ice with the engine I put in it.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Would love to hear that diesel engine pushing snow and then see that the sound is coming from a 72 Chevy pickup. That would be very cool.

Your truck will be able to push a small mountain of snow!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Decided to redo the front section of my oak racks. I removed the stainless screws and replaced them with stainless carriage bolts so they would match the side racks. Also painted the white wire window guard with black bed liner spray so it would match the black bed. Installed it today in snow flurries. What a way to spend Christmas Eve. Looks better than it did.

Thanks Sicklajoie. Had it out in the snow this past weekend. It does better in the snow than I thought it would, the oak racks help give it some extra weight in the back.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Glad to see your using your truck. Mine, just like yours looks great with a inch or two of the white stuff and some road grime....

I was re-reading this thread and you mentioned your getting around 10 mpg. Is this still the case, and if so what carb do you have on her? I'm still around 7 mpg with the 670 Holley. I'm planning on re-building the Edelbrock 600 that came with the truck and putting it back on. My truck runs way too rich... Maybe someone else has some suggestions??? My truck has the HO 330 hp crate motor in it, and it only has around 10k miles on the new engine...

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread though.

Cant go wrong with a quadrajet! If you have the money, a SMI built quadrajet would be by far your best carb for a 4x4 truck.
