Best way to pull an engine? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I'm going to pull this motor out to start a rebuild on it and I'm wondering: what's the most efficient/best way to go about doing it? Leave the tranny attached? Leave the front end on? Take off the grill and radiator, etc.?

on these trucks I like to just take the engine out by itself , no need to remove any sheetmetal just the hood , on cars I like to pull tranny and all ,,,

remove radiator , battery sometimes battery tray// if there is no work planed on the sheet metal i leave in place// remove hood

me i learned by takin out as a set the motor and tranny// so i am so set in my ways i'd not know how to do it any other way

That depends on what all you are going to do. Just engine refresh then pull rad. then motor only. But if you plan to R&R the tranny also then both together.

Yeah the tranny is newly rebuilt. Thanks. I'll just be pulling the radiator and motor.

I always pull together unless the tranny is in great shape.I find it easier to seat the Torque Converter and I usually take the oppourtunity to clean and detail them both.

A trick when pulling engine only and needing to move the truck is to find a couple of long bolts to go thru the bell housing holes and cut a piece of angle iron as wide as the frame rails for them to sit on. This way you can remove the jack from under the trans, allowing the truck to be moved.

When I did my engine swap I had to pull the trans with the engine; the v8 was in the I6 spot and there wasn't enough room between the engine and firewall to get to the trans bolts.
