Old style tach

Got the in dash tach with a red or pink wire and a brown wire. I have a newer computer setup. Only one wire. I would think that I would hook the computer wire up to the red/pink wire and hook the brown one to ground. And in the painless wiring setup that I have there is only one wire also. Don't want to short the tach out. Any suggestions from those that have put the big truck tach in? Wootdog

Originally the tach was grounded by it being in the metal dash cluster.. the red went to fuse box for power and the brown went to the coil negative side. I'm not sure where you would hook up wires for a computer application.

Like Rod mentioned, the red, (pink) wire is for power, (switched ignition), the brown wire is for a tach hookup. Not sure what you have but on the HEI's there is a terminal for the tach and the brown wire hooks to that.

Does your computerized ignition have a terminal marked "tach"?

OK

So red for power and brown to the computer. I would have thought the red wire on the connector would have been attached to the foil run. Thanks guys, Wootdog

Not sure what you mean by computer, but the brown wire HAS to go to the distributor.

Then your fu(ked dude.
Naw, do you mean you have a distributorless vehicle or you have the modern style electronic box (Can't remember the word for that computer thingy either) controling your ignition, fuel, etc. If it is an electronically controled ignition you should still have a way to splice into the wire or have an extra terminal for the tach. Sounds like you need to have it professionally installed though.

tach wire

there is a tach wire that comes out of the computer. The distributor feeds the computer.
